I need a 243 load for 55gn ballistic tips looking for about 3800 fps , I have tried with 45.0gn of Varget but there is quite a bit of muzzle flash, thinking of trying a faster burning powder probably, Hodgdon 335. Has anyone tried this powder and what results have you had.

It's not a need as such, I am experimenting with a smaller bullet head than normal in 243, and am trying to get a fast flat accurate load, 3800 upto 4000fps seems to be the speed commonly quoted when using Varget.

hi mate what lenght barrel have you got. if its pretty short then thats why your getitng the flash. the powder isnt burning up in time. also have you got a mod on the rifle this will help cut down the flash.

you could try reloader 15 43.5 will give you 3700 fps out of a 22 inch barrel. that is top load so if you do go above work up slow !

Hiya Matey

The barrel is 26" with a 1-12 twist, no mod yet certificate is in for renewal now have asked for them this time should have mod on by middle of next month. If I can get a slack handful of R 15 will give it a go along with the 335 one of the lads has dropped off to try.

Cheers

you should easy get those speeds with a 26 inch barrel. im betting if you get the mod on the rifle you will stop the flash anyhow.

Yes your right, just hope firearms dept get new certificate sorted before the old one expires 2 weeks to go, no home visit arrange yet even though forms etc sent in 12 weeks ago, 14 weeks before the expiry date on certificate.

in 58gr v-max you'll get over 3800fps in a 26 inch barrel, loaded with 48grs of n160

Atb.

Snap.

Thanks for that I've just managed to get a small amount of N160 so I'll give them a try.
