i m using ortovox collar, but y can use b&f if y wanna. mammut transreciver box has range up to 90m and has 360 degrees display, ps mammut is the best avalanche t r box, read down the discription. ps i wanted to buy b&f but so many problems with shipping, buying separated collar,... and more expensive. now i m using ortovox collar with mammut barryvox t r box and i m really satisfied. this new one is the fastest locator on the market, 3ple antena, analog+digital, 360 degres display.

That is the problem with technology 'blue'. You buy the newest piece of Kit and after a short while it isn't. There will be better Avalanche systems brought on to the Market, the Kit is designed for Humans and has to be upgraded as new technology progresses. The Collars for Dogs were brought in to help keep the Rescue Dogs safe when looking for casualties on the Slopes and Mountains. Humans already carried Transmitters on them. These had to be able to be picked up by any Receiver on the Market, which is why all devices are set between certain frequencies.

The Collar B&F have has been adapetd from a rescue Dog Collar. The Collars are the same material and the gubbins inside is the same, but has been re-arranged to fit inside the Plastic case which is smaller than the original. B&F will not sell you just the Collar, if you have not already bought a system from them. They know there are better and cheaper Receivers on the Market but have Monopolised the sale of theirs. Clever business sense I guess, but I seem to have a problem with the ethics. Why can't they just sell the Collars? Can some one explain? Surely there must be profit in just the Collar for them, that is the only thing they have developed. The Pieps reciever has a 5 Year warranty, because Pieps gives that anyway. The Collar, which takes the stick, only has one Years warranty, which B&F warranty. That is because the Collar has been 'adapted' by B&F and Pieps will not warranty it. I have heard the B&F Kit is very good and does what it says on the Tin, no dispute with that. There are other things out there that does the same thing, some slightly better as far as the recievers go anyway. I know Pieps have approached the guys at B&F for ideas etc, etc. I don't know it just seems to grate on me a little. The not being able to buy just a Collar business and just adapting an already used system and charging more for it than the original. It will not be long before guys go to other Avalanche systems I suppose. In Years to come I expect there will be a 'chip' you can implant in your Dog and track it that way. There was a time when you couldn't get a Camera the size of a Fly, or Fibre Optics were a thing of the future.

I wonder how the flashing light effects things below ground. I wonder if the Foxes bolt quicker because of the light emitted. I have heard some Dogs are getting damaged in different areas of their Face and Chest. It must be like an Alien coming in. Especially as most are not used to even seeing a Dog never mind that close with a flashing light attached.....

We work before with the Pieps and the Orthovox senders and we found it not 100% ! We allways got some difference in the distance ! The long range work perfect but to test the short range we use 2 collars ...also the old deben and it was better in the short range than the new Pieps !

I hear it got something to do with the software on the finders ! I hear that pieps and B&F work together and got their own software for the dogfinder ! So i think that would be the problem with all the other Avalache systems that they all got their own software and that it isn´t 100 % for the dogfinders !

...definatly something to think about and to found out if it is right or wrong !

Greeting´s

Bought my Pieps separate from the collars when B&F first started selling them. It works perfect. They've apparently since changed the policy which I can understand from a biz standpoint. I don't know about any software mods to the Pieps and when I e-mailed and asked, I couldn't get a straight answer so I bet the answer is that nothing special was done to their receivers.

As far as depth and accuracy, it's always been dead on from 1 foot to the deepest at 7 foot with the collar to date. I'd be interested to know more about the new locator though and whether it operates quietly without all the beeping.....

i'm not takin a stab at anyone but i was just wonderin what sort of settes do folk work to need that sort of range, did somebody say 90meters :hmm: ?? would it not be better to think more about whether or not a terrier should be entered... the old grey box will serve me for a me while longer i think :)

All of this obsession with locator collars reminds me of the folks that think the brand of shoes they play in will determine their score in the game. Guess what? It doesn't. The game is not about the shoes.

The same can be said for locator collars. With rare exception it hardly matters what kind of locator collar you use. In truth, the old Mark I collar was not that hard to tape up and keep dry, and the new Deben LRT, Bellman and Flint, or any other system being used is far beyond what most folks will ever need to keep their dogs safe. The number of folks digging more than 40 feet deep strikes me as being very low!

Whatever locator you chose, for whatever reason, remember the most important thing: "It ain't the shoes."
