kevin kiely 66
nice dog mate.i prefer the half cross butwhich dog will kill more .on average throughout the full workin life with durability, catch rate and gameness in mind? If i was just getting one for the red lad pre ban,i would opt for a 3/4 bred animal,,with foxy you must put him under pressure fast, if he gets a head of steam up your dog is going to run out of field space and your fox will be gone All the gameness in the world wont catch him if your dog dont have the legs,,, cheers lads, shes a fine bitch, the leggy first cross would be the job for it,but i think you would catch amore with the three quater, especially when hunting covers in the day, maybe longer working life when its in its later years being racier. but the greater risk of long term injury and the risk that the dog may jib sooner if being worked hard regular every season or do yee think the three quater would do the business year in year out for 7or8 seasons Edited October 7, 2010 by kevin kiely Quote Link to post

fence-hopper 0
possibly my favorite type of lurcher great prey drive very game and eager to please can be a little headstrong if not kept on top of when young and ive found them to be touchy with strangers ,i also think its easier to get a good wheaten cross than a bull cross because the wheaten x cross is not as popular there is not as much shit about,i also find the wheaten cross does not bring as much attention to you as the bull cross and the wheaten crosses coat hides a mulitide of sins i also hope they never get as popular as the bull cross for reasons i mentioned earlier, there is nothing a good bull cross cant do that a good wheaten cross cant do either thats fact and thats not putting bull crosses down i love bull blood also and have had a few regards hedz  Quote Link to post

macker 5
lads to be honest lads on the half bred weaton or 3/4 bred issue is to me just like saluki half or 3/4 there are plenty of weaton cross lurchers strains just like the so many saluki lurchers lines that breed so many good dogs its the same with weaton crosses even tough there are plenty of good half breds and 3/4 bred dogs which have started certain lines alot of the time line bred weaton lurchers bred from best to best with other breeds can and are often better dogs. my mate had a half bred weaton that would kill hares most 3/4 dogs would not catch atb macker Quote Link to post
bolio 51
Pal of mine retired this dog at the end of last season. First cross, an excellent fox dog and he took a few hares when he was younger too. Quote Link to post

Skinny 29
from what i have seen the wheaten terrier has good qualities to offer to a lurcher cross. Mostly lack of concern with sharp teeth in light or dark. I would say this it is vital for the half cross to have as much height and length that the greyhound bitch is a brute really 29 tts and the dog is big too to produce half bred's around the twenty five mark at least. The half cross is often not that fast but seldom let go when they catch and are ideal around a dig. I have found alot of three quarter's throw smooth and loose more head than bull cross. I think in the times we live the rough coat is very desirable. The best I had seen was a second generation half cross. Also seen a couple of very good lurchers when crossed to bull and collie crosses. Like all crosses good points and bad points if they get the taste for dogs or live stock then they can be as bad as any. Most I have seen very people orientated and full of character. deerhoundgreyhound 8
i have got a wheaton grey / bull grey rough haired fawn dog, he is a stunner and i am gutted that i have to get rid of him because i am forced to move to another property which doesnt allow pets, he's 12 month old and i have found him to be quite intelligent and he responds really well to the tennis ball, i havent even got him onto a sniff of a rabbit yet as i was going to wait until he was 14 month old. Cleanspade 3,322
wheaten x whippet. first cross the coat isnt a problem . clip in spring and leave well alone in the winter months. ive found my first cross is a very usefull dog. and he has never thrown a sicky in five seasons. you have to wonder if he had more sighthound blood how many sick days would there have been. especially as i run him on very rought ground Quote Link to post
