artic 595
I had to do it and I don't feel bad. The good ol lady was out last night celebrating a friends new job. Whilst I was waiting for her to make up her mind with what to wear, and what makeup to put on I was thinking Lamping. That lamp was calling me! Could I really make it a 5th time this week.... no... OH YES I BLOODY CAN!!!! Keep cool, smile, tell her that she looks like an angel, make her a cup of tea, a few extra cuddles and I love you's. Anyway, I walk with excitment towards the plug hole, I press the switch down, and the the small hum of the electricity begins to take place..... Yes folks I don't have all these new products, I'm old fashioned! Bye angel have fun, love you lots and take care! I wave her goodbye. Straight upstairs moleskins on, I will need a new pair, Hmmmm, 32 waist now! It's a waiting game 7,8 o'clock, 9,10 o'clock excitment building up. I walk outside in the garden to check the weather, silent very silent but with a good drizzle. This will do, time 00:15. I pick up the lamp, check the wires, bring my spare bulb, knife, head torch, water, first aid kit. I walk back into the house and both dogs are on hind legs, tails whipping from left to right hitting my rare collection of vespa postcards off the book case. I must frame them and hang them up! Hup Hup into the back of the 4X4. Lets go! A small drive and I reach my destination. I went for a walk there during the day just to see what has been ploughed and what machinary has been left out. 2 fields ploughed, the rest untouched. The rain has now started to come down hard, but in short bursts. I head for the first field, I flick the switch, both dogs trembling with excitement, heads following the beam. There's our first victim, a squatter. I slowly positioned myself into his path, my dog has seen it, his eyes are fixed onto his prey, a few more steps, off you go boy! He powers up to the rabbit and strikes WHACK! He tumbles over twice, a sray of mud flicks up, I see the rabbit fly over his head and land on his back and runs in a frantic manner confused, he powers on again and throws his whole body at it for a second time, this time it's game over. For 29tts he can get right down to them, however he is a tumbler. Further up the field we go, I scan, there's nothing apart from two badgers running down the field towards the small spinney. The next field, stubble. It crunches as we walk, the rain has stopped too. Another flick of the switch shows two rabbits 45yrds or so away hoping away ready to run, the pup see's them, I send him on, he makes his way running along the beam, both rabbits bolt, he chooses his victim, changes his gear, 2 sharp turns and picks the rabbit up off his feet. I then scan to see where the second rabbit has got to. There he was 15yrds or so form the hedge. I slip the older boy, he runs out of the beam and along the hedge row and powers in from behind the rabbit, it bolts, one strike miss, second strike miss, it's that silent that on both attempts I could hear his jaws snapping, the rabbit makes a leap into the air, then jinks towards the hedge, third strike and he tumbles into the well bedded ditch. He manages to get out, a good shake and back he comes, a quick check. Well done boy, nevermind. Four more slips resulted with one more in the bag. There wasn't going to be "Just one more run" so I decided to call it a night. He did well, and has recovered from a foot sprain resulting him rested up for four weeks. The pup is coming on nicley and has taken to the lamp well, each session he is progressing. I do like these short lamping sessions, further into the season I will extend our hours. The best bit of the night was.....yes.... the whole bed to myself! 3 Quote Link to post
