Guest Buttermilk
I rarely start a thread, but I am utterly furious. I find it appalling that someone can 'resist' a well reared pup at a very reasonable price....but then suddenly, when the pups are free....they'll take two...? This makes my blood boil...especially as the person can't pick up the pups or arrange transport it seems....what is going on? How on earth are you going to afford to look after a pup properly if you can't even give a small donation or arrange to pick her up??? I wouldn't give them a goldfish....never mind a vulnerable 8 week old pup. A minority of people on THL seem to regard working dogs as dispenible, inanimate objects. I know some of the best working dogmen in the UK and Eire and have done for many years...they care for their dogs and respect them. Some people would do well to take a leaf out of their book.

poacher3161 1,766
Totally agree buttermilk .At least buy the lad with the pups a couple of bags of dog food.I have dogs gifted off close mates and i do vice versa but i would be to embarrsed to go to a complete stranger and exspect a pup for nothing without at least offering some thing. Guest Buttermilk
I know, you're right. I just find it so bloody disgraceful.
Simoman 110
This has always been a problem, the initial purchase price is a mere drop in the ocean compared to the rearing of a dog. TBH the breeder should say jog on and its the breeders perogative who the pups go to, if you don't feel comfortable with the purchaser don't sell, simplessssss
bolio 49
This does my head in too Buttermilk. I've heard so many people disparage Saluki bred lurchers during the time that I was travelling back and forth to England to go out with loads of different fen runners, trying to learn which types of bloodlines might mix well to produce a dog that could do the job both here and in Lincs/Cambs. Then I retired a bitch that I had bred from two of these dogs I had acquired,to a pal who lives out in the sticks on breeding terms. When he bred her, you'd be amazed how the saluki hating crabbers came out of the woodwork hoping to get on the cheap, breeding which had cost me more than 10 years in holidays and untold expenses etc. And anyone who knows me knows that money and I don't interface very successfully. I guess I'm the fool from the famous saying...., lol.
Irish Lurcher 1,013
I would never give a dog to a complete stranger for nothing, never. Friends yes or friends of friends if they are good dog people and can be vouched for. What if the pup didn’t make its expected grade? Well I am sure it would be passed on as the owner would place no value on it having received it for nothing, I think that a payment is a form of commitment to any pup bought, you have committed your money and time into this pup and you will ensure that every effort would be afforded to the pups training and well being, not so sure that this would be the case if the pup was received FOC as in this case. Just my own opinion.
shepp 2,285
The two free pups will probably be on some free ads site in a couple of weeks.
barney 0
Not hard to get a dog to you even without having transport.I've had two dogs up from England using greyhound transport, easy to arrange and well worth the cost. Agre with giving something for a "free" pup/dog too.I was lucky enough to be given a cracking bitch, didn't want to offer money but gave the guy a bottle to say thank you when I picked her up
Bosun11 537
I think it's a head wrecker for any decent self respecting dogman and i'd agre with you all. Bolio, that tales a sad one but your concence is clear, you know the score It's funny but the first thing I thought of when I read the ad was, would I know any decent folk who would take a pup? Sadley I don't, but dreamer that I am, I'd like to think one or two find good homes, warm beds and plenty of graft and maybe, just maybe, one might become a legend! Me too...I've been racking my brains all afternoon and calling people. I know it's silly to get emotionally involved but it's the pups I feel concerned about. We've only bred the odd litter over the last 24 years and have had good homes lined up well before the pups were born. I think working dogs need so much more 'protection' than pet dogs. You can't get any better home for a Lurcher or Terrier than a good, knowledgable working home...however if that dog falls into unscrupulous hands, their lives can be a living hell.
