HALTY LAD 92
What is the best chokes for Rough shooting ,Game shooting and wild fowling? If i was to buy a fixed choke what would be the best alrounder chokes? possibly a few clays. i'm looking at an o/u Id go with half in first barrel, 3/4 in the second. But may change to 3/4 and full for high geese or ducks. Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
Difficult choice in my opinion. Rough and game personally 1/4 and 1/2 Wildfowling 1/2 and 3/4 or full Best bet is to just get a multichoke so you have flexibility! Just to add another 'spanner' different cartridges will also 'change' chokes to some degree Edited September 17, 2010 by masmiffy Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
it all depends on what type of shooting you want to do, if it's chiefly decoying, thenm more open chokes will be fine as the birds will be closer, if it's general rough shooting then something middle of the road, if it pass shootng, then tighter, I stick with 1/4 and 1/2 for pretty much everything, unless I'm shooting ABT then I'll want to increase my choke to get a denser pattern for those edge on targets. 1/4 will kill or at least knock birds down to quite a distance, say 20/25m or so, 1/3 will let you push ot to 30/35m, which IMO is at the thick end of what is practical in terms of most peoples shooting ability and what is good practice in terms of ethics and ensuring a clean kill, or ones that you can swiftly recover. if it's fixed choke you're going for then 1/4 ans 1/2 is a good bet. if you choose tighter and you intend on shooting much very close or are an average shot, you'll be kicking yourself as anything you do hit, you'll double it's weight with shot, plus you'll make shooting that muchh trickier forr yourself. there are plenty of good value new or second hand gun with multichokes, as pretty much all guns except for the base models have MC, and as masmiffy said, different cartridges will behave diferently through differen chokes, so patterning loads you intend to use is a good idea, as the shot material, wad type, choke constriction, and load weight will all affect the spread of shot. IMHO, there is no one all round choice, there are compromises, buy for true adaptability and flexibility, you'll need to go down the MC route, unless of course you're looking at an old gun with fixed chokes, in which case you have to shoot within the gun/cartridge limitations, which we all have to do to ensure clean kills and maximum respect for the quarry. weejohn 3
i would say you shouldnt need any tighter than 1/4 & 1/2 Quote Link to post
Terryorr 27
I have 2 semi autos here (multi choke) and to be honest, the choke I have in them is 1/2 and it is very seldom changed, and it does most situations. Quote Link to post
