All my fault

Recommended Posts

Went for a walk with young lurcher and inexperienced terrier this morning, mrs had the car so got her to drop me off,she was in a hurry and I got out of car without locator/collar or mobile phone. Oh well never mind just have a little mooch about down nr the shore, start walking lurcher off lead, then decide to let terrier off  , walking for about 5 mins across some rough fields, plenty scrub about and signs of rabbits. Terrier dissapears up ahead over a rise toward the beach, I follow, no sign of her, call a few times, then lurcher runs ahead and marks a spot, I take a look and see terrier has pushed herself into what looks like a large rabbit warren, I can hear her below grunting and digging but cant see her, try callin her out...no chance... :hmm: , wait around for a while, thinkin about my options, decide to see if she gives up of her own accord, Im thinking she wont be able to get in far it will be too tight an shes green as grass so she might give up after a while.....Im getting worried now kickin my self for leavin locator in car and phone so cant call anyone to fetch spade..ground sandy here at this part...and now It is completely silent I cant here anything, scratchin, breathin,movement...nothin.. I head off to the nearest house, meet a bloke good enough to lend me a spade and jog back across fields and sand. I call down the opening a couple of times..no sound at all...I cut away the turf, and start to dig ahead of where I can see the tube turn to the right, got to be careful as the sand is quite loose, an I dont want to block or lose the tube..to be honest at this point Im thinkin the worst, dogs suffocated, and to top it off not even in a fox earth but a bloody rabbit warren...am thinkin the mrs an kids gonna be gutted...I keep diggin, and altho its not a hard dig the spade is next to useless even in sand the head bends in half...I get down about a meter and Im wondering if she has come out whilst i went for spade cos the tube is very small an Im thinkin there is no way she could of got through that...then I hear a dog yapping, I look up and there is the lurcher ( forgot all about him as i was so engrossed in what I was doing) hes chased a rabbit into some gorse and cant reach it...and now hes yappin with frustration.. :wallbash: ...arrrgghh, for fucks sake, the rabbit comes back out the gorse and he heads after it in full voice.. befor he loses it in more cover...then he jogs back to me with his tongue out and all glassy eyed like hes done a great job!...I open up the tube and reach in, I feel warm fur, grab and pull, its the bitch, shes wedged tight, I pull her free and lift her out :boogie: ...Im delighted shes not dead, she been to ground for an hour,...I wrestle with her to stop her going back in. Put both dogs on lead, walk back across fields, return the bent spade...and head home with a lurcher thats started giving voice and a terrier that goes to ground for rabbits.....what a bloody day!

some would of put the spade to better use lol :icon_redface:

lol. nah mate Im hardly gonna condemn an inexperienced dog thats never been to ground before for trying for a rabbit...seen a few other peoples experienced terriers that have made that mistake and have still made worthwhile workers for them. Where my foxing permission is there is no bunnies, Im more bothered by the lurcher giving voice in frustration cos he couldnt catch in the rough.(even tho they were unexpected runs) Dont want that to become a habit, so just gonna keep him on lead until hes had some easy slips/catches Ive heard its a hard habit to break once its started but I dont know because Ive never experienced it until now.
