Exercising Pups

Recommended Posts

How long should you walk a pup for, I mean just walking round woods etc. Not hunting. I take my 12 week pup for a stroll for an hour a day, is that too much? She's running round the whole time, not lagging behind or anything. I don't think its doing any harm but I just want to make sure. What do people think?

The best way to rear pups if in a field as a group where they exercise in short bursts. They are less likely to overdo it as they aren’t getting over excited as it’s all just normal. With pups in kennels/home they tend to get less opportunity so when they are out they push themselves more and risk harm by overdoing it. I’d try to replicate the field environment with lots of short walks, play rather than one or two long ones.

I wouldn't even walk it yet just let it grow I never even started takeing my pup out the garden until it was 4 month old and then it was only out for about 15 mins your best of gettin the pup as fat as u can so it can fill out proply and when its about 7 month then start getting it as fitt as u can atb

Its only 3mth old mate, go easy with it. You will see when it has a little energy, and when it need to sleep. Pups need a lot of sleep, to grow. Dont worry to much, let it have a play then put it to kennel... no hard and fast rules to puppys, just common sense, good luck. Atb Russ.

Spot on there runforyourlife

Top lamper 2k10, its advice like that why I don't posr on here much these days! As fat as possible?? That's not good for anything, I'll stick to a well balanced nutritious diet for her thanks. And getting her fit as possible at 7 months when she's still growing??? Thanks but I'll ignore that advice if you don't mind.

Thanks for the advice everyone else, when I take her out I stroll slowly and she's off the lead the whole time, she doesn't stop running and exploring and still sprints round the living room with her toys for half an hour when I get back. I make a point of not overdoing it by letting her do everything at her own pace when we're out but she seems to be bloody hyper! God knows how much energy she'll have when she's older!!

Interesting post for Me, HI all I am a newbie here. I am picking up My first lurcher pup next weekend so will be in the same boat. For many years I have breed and shown Bull Terriers and am lucky enough to of won many prize`s and have dogs that I have breed all over the world. Perhaps I am looking at this wrong but I will bring My pup along as I would of any one of My puppy Bullys. As soon as He can go out I will just have very short strolls in very busy places. To get Him as social and accepting of as many environments as possible without freaking out. I certainly wouldnt leave Him at home until 4 months old then take him out into the world to get spooked at every passing lorry or screaming child. Just My thoughts

Cheers Justin

Sounds like your doing fine mate, as Thorny said, at that age it's more about experiencing the world in general rather than getting miles/hours under it's paws, everything's new and exciting to a pup, get it out in as many different situations as possible for a steady well balanced dog.

Good luck with the pup.

It myt not be good for it though but it let's the pup take fully shape instead of walking a 3 month pup an hour how many miles can ya do in an hour at least 2 so I think that's a bit too much isint it lyk as it hasent even started developing its proper muscles yet

so what your saying is,although you know it's bad for the pup,you will let it get a fat as it can,to take a 12 wk old pup out for an hour and cover 2 miles would be some going, you would have to be carrying it.
