skycat 6,173
If your'e talking about Durateston, vets do supply it but it costs around £48 for a 5ml bottle. Reccomended dose for a bitch around 25kilos is a 1ml dose to begin with followed up by 0.5ml at two weekly intervals for as long as you need to stop her coming in season. Most pet vets do not know the safe dose for bitches as Durateston isn't licenced for bitches: too high a dose can cause liver failure within days or weeks. Plus sighthounds process drugs more slowly due to their low body fat which is why the liver suffers as it is used to disperse drugs: hence also the reason for increased risk when anaesthetising sighthounds. Also, prolonged use of Durateston, even at the correct dose for bitches, carries a risk of shutting down egg production permanently. I know of 2 people who kept their bitches on it for a few years and they became infertile and couldn't get pregnant when their owners tried to breed from them.

Or is it a trade secret?! The vet also told me that you could give 1ml once every three or four weeks. I also bred a litter from a bitch who had been on Durateston for 2 years and she had no problem. The bitches I was talking about had been on it for at least 5 years to my knowledge, though whose to say that they wouldn't have been infertile anyway: guess we'll never know. Did you keep the Greyhound bitches on it all the time, as in, never having a break from it to have a season? Or did you let them have a season once a year? Just wondering as I've got a 6 monthly bitch which I'm trying it on: her phantoms last over 3 months so she's not a lot of use to me unless I surpress her seasons. tote 856
There's also another season suppressant it's called laurabolin, that's what I used on the greyhound bitches I ran on the flapping tracks. It comes in two strengths 25mg/ml and 50mg/ml, both in 10ml bottles. I only ever used the single strength [25mg/ml] and the dosage was 1ml every month, never had any bother with bitches coming into season once they were taken off the jab and the only one that was bred from went on to have four litters. My mate bought a bottle a fortnight ago and it cost him £38. berty1 8
Laurabolin... is used on gamecocks (where fighting is legal) to give them more aggression at the pit, its a form testosterone steroid I think.

skycat 6,173
Thanks for the info folks. I've just remembered that it was Laurabolin this bloke had his bitch on for years and she never took when mated. He never gave her a break from it either I don't think.
