Little Butch 16
As a part of my 2 year Arboriculture Diploma we have to do a year long project which Includes Researching, making something from It and finishing with a presentation. I've chosen to do mine on either Pear or Apple trees, describing how they grow with pictures taken each week, describe how they're used to make Cider and maybe even give It a go. We get a year which obviously wouldn't give me enough time to grow a Tree from seed and use the fruit to create Cider so If I did decide to actually make the Cider I'd use shop bought juice.. I'm undecided whether to use a Pear or Apple Tree? Anybody have an Idea of where I could get the seeds from? It's something I'm genuinly Interested In and I'm not doing It solely because I have to choose a project.. It's something I'd like to do anyway so thought why not combine the two! So any experience with either growing the trees or making Cider would be much appreciated! Butch

Little Butch 16
Yea, but not all Seeds will grow and I want seeds for a specific type of Cider Apple.. So not quite as easy as that! I looked on the net and read about something called Rootstock, seems to be a way of controlling the size of the Trees. Another option would be to buy an already germinated seed about 6 Inches tall.. Butch
Neal 1,874
The root stock will govern the eventual height of the adult tree. Generally speaking, I think it's basically either small, medium or large. Trees grown from seeds from a particular apple don't necessarily give you duplicate apples in the next generation. This is why there's such a huge number of apple varieties and why so many have suffixes like seedling or pippin.
Little Butch 16
Yea I just read about that, cheers though. I think I'll buy a really young Tree that's been rootstocked! Just need to decide on a specific Apple or Pear Tree! I've registered on a Homebrew Forum aswell as they'll be clued up on which Apples are best etc. Butch
oakey 57
If you go for apples go for kingston black if you do go for pear make sure it's a perry pear easy to spot at the moment as they are red round and hard and not very good to eat
Neal 1,874
My cooking apple tree, which a gardening friend estimated to be about 100 years old which fits the age of the house, fell over thanks to rotting roots, heavy rain and too many apples about four weeks ago. It was huge and the garden sure looks different without it.
ZARATHRUSTRA 0
shop bought apple juice makes shit cider! its easy to make from apples! real pressed apple juice has enough to suger and yeast in to naturally ferment!
shepp 2,285
My mate spoke to some cider makers in Herefordshire about cider making and was told that only proper cider apples give you the real depth of flavour you get from a good cider. We made some with various apples from round here and it was really nothing better than something to get pissed on, not really a pleasure to drink.
