Guest stewie
Wouldn't bother with wooly maggots mate. There just like pheasants, always trying to kill themselves. Pigs are the way forward, and more return for your hard efforts (food wise). As for money, you wont make any on such a small scale, you will break even or better, but it will not be profitable. Profit wise, that strip of land looks ideal for a lure coursing event, pleanty of loons out there that would pay you money to let their pot lickers chase a rag about a field . Just a joke, btw before anyone takes offence. FTB lol thats not a bad idea mate!!! ill get a few tho still give it ago and more pigs i think
Guest stewie
4 sheep per acre , you need 100 sheep to make worth doing.Last year make £100 each ! walk in. is that with you giving them food clint or just grazing???
Ideation 8,216
To be honest mate, like has been said, best money was in selling it privately, as 1/4, 1/2 or a whole lamb. Also handy as f**k for swapping with people / keeping people sweet. Did make a bit of money rearing on calves once, buying them in as sucklers and running them on until they were slaughtered. To be honest the one thing with sheep is the associated costs, like feed once they have decimated that grass, health care (feet, fly spray etc), and other general maintenance, so after all that, with a small scale flock your only going to get cheaper meat etc. There is no market anymore for raw fleece, although it makes good insulation. Pigs are a good bet, with regards to meat, feeding (go round collecting slops) and looking after, and you could even try breeding some of those popular koon koon pigs for some cash. Ummmmmmmmmmm sounds stupid but one of the best and fastest cash animals for meat is the rabbit - big newzealand whites, if kept in sheds and kept warm etc they breed and mature to killing size like f**k. With all of this tho, your best bet is to just try to remove your spending rather than 'make' much money Good luck. If you need any advice of sheep keeping gimmie a shout. Edited to add - we also got subs from the government. Edited September 14, 2010 by Ideation

Prices are probably about the same, unless they are registered pure bred Jacobs, in which case they will be more expensive. They are nice wee things, but they are not really meat producing animals as such and so the quantity and quality of meat is not great. They are kept by people who ust like keeping Jacobs if that makes sense, and due to their convenient size. When it comes to production of meat etc your best off going for some kind of utalitarian cross bred - like a charolais x, suffolk x, texel x etc. If i was going to keep a pure breed i would keep some Dorsets, nice animals, good meat and plenty, really quiet and calm animals and if handled properly can lamb twice a year. OR do quail on mass production, theyre eggs fetch a few quid and are easy to keep/feed.
Ideation 8,216
No money in eggs, but raising chickens for the table with the odd fancy breeding pair, selling pol etc, could be a winner.
