put an obsticle between him and his food at feeding time and when he jumps over to get his dinner give a command such as over dont make it high make it easy at first.

thats the best way to get them started then later just climb over a stone wall and encourage the dog to follow you as for gates i never taught my cocker to jump gate as legs can get caught and broken she deos however jump them if she thinks she can gives me heart failure evry time think she just copied the lurcher and the lab to do this. i think they are better trying to get through a gate between the spars. its just the leg brake thing that stops me teaching them gate jumping. i have seen many spaniels jump gates its just i can hear the crack in my head if they get it wrong and that could be a promising career over. its always something to think about with any dog.
