artic 595
I assume most hunters were out last night in the ideal conditions. I decided to venture out into the strong winds too. Now I dont know about anybody else, but I felt like a child waiting to go on a ride at a fun fair. I don't know why I felt this way, the perfect conditions maybe... Strange what a dog and a lamp, wind and drizzle can make someone feel. Did any feel that although we had strong winds and slight drizzle, it was still a warm night. The temp this way was reading 16c! Last night my 13 month old was doing it solo, the older dog is recovering from his injury. The first field produced several ruby eyes feeding nicely away from cover. I chose our rabbit, positioned myself and pup and sent him on. A quick sprint, the rabbit bolts away and eventually gets the better of the pup and makes it home. Nevermind, we move on. 50yrds or so to my left another rabbit is about to be challenged. This one is a sitter, I gently move forward, the pup fixed on the beam like he's hypnotized, the rabbit lifts and sprints for home, the pup this time cuts it's path and does a neck breaking dive catching his first of the night in his jaws. Several fields on and 4 more missed attempts from the pup. Crossing the ditch we go I hear rustling from the small bury beside me, a flick of the switch see's two beautiful muntjac bolt and head for the large wood, taking long glorious strides. Amazing creatures they are too. I slowly scan the fields, 4 partridge sleeping, 2 hares joyfully playing. It's bloody great to be out I can tell you! All your troubles and stresses just vanish! My pup eagerly waiting for the next run. There 40yrds away were 2 rabbits, the nearest cover the woods 100yrds or so away, or near by us. One rabbit stands on his hind legs, the dog sent on, closing in on the rabbit, surely he's going to bolt now, the pup makes another dive at the rabbit and took it from its legs. Two in the bag. I'm happy with his progress and more importantly the pup is educating himself. A third rabbit was taken along a hedge row, and a fouth which the rabbit made my pup work for it. So to sum up, it was the perfect conditions and not so many rabbits out. The pup did well with what was there to be had. I covered alot of ground last night, and it goes to show, that sometimes the not so perfect conditons make the better nights. Desertdog, lets see what tonight brings. I didn't take any pictures, although I'm able to on my phone, however poor quality at night. I have finally allowed myself to buy a decent camera and awaiting it's arrival.
