kestrel attacking my decoys

Recommended Posts

out with a friend shooting pigeons over stubble a few days ago. the shooting was going well and we had plenty of shot birds and shell decoys out..i had noticed a female kestrel hunting near by and even with all the gun shots she started to take an intrest in our decoys, after making 2 or 3 passes she dove straight in for a kill, only to find her dinner was made of plastic, she sat there scratching and pecking the decoy.realy wish i had a video camera with me,was really amazing to see..just wondering if anyone else had anything strange or intresting like this happen while out shooting pigeons

Had 3 Buzzards hovering over decoys a few weeks back, one actually attacked a wounded pigeon. Also seen a few Sparrowhawks as well.

same here pal with a buzzard, it started to hover over a hypa flapper we had out and then it dropped to about a foot over the decoy then must of realized it wasnt the real thing, also saw my first peregrine in wild aswell whilst out shooting, it landed about 6ft above us in the hide looking at our pattern but it cant of been set out good because it didnt have ago at the decoys :D

I`ve had many strikes at my deeks over the years, mainly from Sparrowhawks. One of the last times a Sparrowhawk dived down and snatched a freshly shot pigeon, took off with it and landed further down the field. Later on i had to retrieve a woody from that area, from under a tree, and found the pigeon that the Sparrowhawk had taken. It had plucked it and taken the breast meat off it. I don`t mind them taking the odd pigeon off me, it`s a great scene to witness. ;)

in our area we get quite alot of sparrow hawks and buzzards flying over the decoys .

father in law said he was out one day and seen a sparrow hawk lift a shot pigeon , and take it further down the field... also ive seen a buzzard drop onto a dead pigeon that landed in the field behind where we was shooting from ..
