Cropping birds

Hi All.. Got told by an old boy,that I should take the crops out of pigeons and crows before feeding as they may contain Ivy and other poisonous berries. Ive had a few ferrets over the years but have never done it or had any problems. Does anyone else do this?

Must admit mate we have never bothered with cropping pigeons never had any probs with the ferrets but thats an intresting one

i usually take a handfull of feathers of there breasts but if the pigeons have been feeding on rape leaves sometimes i take the crop out as the crop stinks

this time of year i have 3 freezers full of pigeons and never take out the crop i thaw and feed as needed i remember as a child when first starting out an old boy told me that there was a part in the liver that i had to cut out or it would kill the ferrets and i used to shoot alot of starling and feed them to my ferrets and the same old boy said i had to take the heads of them as that part would kill the ferrets but after of 30years of never doin this and never having a problem you can bet its just one of those old wives tales that they tell youngsters just to see how gulible they are

When feeding rabbits its always fur on guts out So why not with birds?

Round the farm over the last week since the harvest has all been taken in,there has been quite a few woodies picked up alive by the dogs, these birds are feathered up(as though they're cold) and dont look right needless to say the ferrets did nt get given them

i suppose it cant do any harm? it may even contain something that ferrets need like vitamins or minerals from the what the bird has eaten. the ferrets probably wont mind anyway i know mine wont, i let them have a run around in the garden yesterday and my albino jill got hold of a big black slug and before i could get to her it was gone

and slugs and snails are carriers of lung worm larvae particularly deadly to dogs
