Phantom 631
AA fields because they are cheap and do the biz in all my guns. Hard hitting as well. FX16 grain, because they are just as good and a quid cheaper than the AAF's Milbro Caledonian, because I was nieve and didn't know any better back then Fantastic expansion at 10 M against steel plates Marksman pointed, again because IU believed the hype back in the day and didnt realize that BB's had a more stable trajectory. Promethius yellow, cuz my son thought they would be good and he baught me 4 tubs one year (it was the thought that counts) D&N Geco in .177 for superbly accurate paper punching out to 10 M in my pistols. Got me three gold medals and a few other pistol awards with them Dirt cheap as well Also as they are flat heads they dont jam the 30 shot magazine on the old ASI Sniper Rifle Eley Wasps in .177 for finishing off less than perfect kills with my HW40 pistol. Some crappy yellow things in .177 that I used in my Co2 powered CP99 when I first got it. Made wonderful streamers of black melted plastic fly from the barrel and these pellets were superb for fouling up the barrel and coating it in burnt plastic. Thats about all I can think of now Phantom Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Superdomes, never had an issue with them, they put plenty of bunnies my way, and they're cheap Quote Link to post
dillan 19
Cheers Phantom Lets put it another way, apart from choosing a brand that is consistant in weight, size profile and suitability for the gun can one assume that pointed ones are for better penetration, cleaner kill, domed for long range high impact, hollow for short range high impact etc. What are your thoughts. stealthy1 3,964
Pointed pellets are crap, all the brands that I have tried had more flyers then the RAF Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Ahh I get yah now Pointed ones are the worst of all for accuracy. One slight knock or nick on the tip will destabalise the flight no end, so as far as penatration goes, crap because they have to hit the target before penatration can occure Wad cutters/Flatheads are okay for close to medium range. They transfere most (if not all) their kinetic energy upon impact. This is very useful when enclosed in buildings and you dont want ricochets. The God that was the late great John Darling used them to good effect on ferrals and even bunny's. Although he mostly used Domes Domed pellets are the best all rounders. They hit hard, Travel well and transfere kinetic energy well too Domed pellets generally have the very best accuracy and penetration IMHO. There is a reason that domed pellets have stood the test of time. Fancy ones come and go, but domes are here to stay. I think most people would agree with the last part of that Phantom Quote Link to post
dillan 19
Excellent reply, just what I was after, whats the theory behind hollow point then Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Hey Bud, The theory is that they will expand outwards like a bullet. Something like this: However to get that kind of expansion you need a very high velocity A sub 12 will not give the expansion that the marketers claim. Unless you hit a steel plate. I did a reply to a thread on this subject not too long back, I'll see if I can find it and link for you But basically pellet expansion in a sub 12 is a myth, the only expansion is from the skirt when it fills out to fill the rifling. Phantom 631
OOps wrong one, heres the one I was thinking of http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/164191-rws-superhollowpoint-pellets/page__p__1657572__fromsearch__1#entry1657572 Phantom Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
I can agree with that one, the hollow point pellets do nothing in the way of expanding when used in a sub legal limit air rifle... However (and it's a big however) aerodynamically they are superiour to any other pellet form, and give better accuracy. (Trust me on this, I'm an aerodynamicist by training!) The hollow point means that the "tip" that meets the air is just air, so they are far less susceptible to flyers due to damage, and transfer more energy downrange. I know it's counterintuitive, but it's true! Pointed pellets I wouldn't even bother with. Wadcutter types offer good close range performance but tend to have a high form drag so lose speed rapidly. The domes have a much lower Cd and offer a good all round performance. I particularly like the RWS superdomes, shame they've stopped making them. The Napier lubricated UPH pellets, which are the superdomes but with the napier lubricant added, are superb but pricey. The accupel I find very consistent and accurate in most guns. We are getting ripped off in the shooting world with anything that is 'lead' based!! 12g carts are going for stupid money as are pellets!!! Quote Link to post
dillan 19
Thanks guys, some good advice and underpinning knowledge there, not just for me but for newcomers finding it a minefield because of varieties available these days Dillan Quote Link to post
silentshot1 206
AA Fields, reason being I found that accupels didn't give me the confidence I have with the extra weight of AA Field in heart shots on pigeons at longer ranges. I had a few flying away after what should have been a 'lights out' shot. Having said that, I'd happily use accupels on rabbits, rats, crows, etc and have had great results, but where most of my shooting involves pigeons now I stick to Fields in both .177 and .22. I tried FX but for some reason, the gun wasn't keen, although they're the same! PS. Davy's right, we really are getting stung for ammunition. Before they realised the RRP, I got AA Fields in a local shop for £7.50 for both .177 and .22. Once they realised, .22 went up to £14.50 and .177 to £13.50. You can't blame them, but if they could happily sell them, covering cost, mark up etc. for £7.50, where is the other £7.00 + going? PPS Still kicking myself for not stocking up in the first placed!!
