Passed my DSC1

Recommended Posts

Well i am now, officially, a trained hunter :gunsmilie::D I have been on my DSC1 course over the passed 4 days and i have now passed. It was held at ilkley through the BDS and it was lead by Vince Reynolds of viper engineering. I found the whole course to be highly enjoyable and also educational and a great way to spend 4 days. I managed to ace all of the exams getting 20/20 on the visual test, 48/50 on the 'Written' paper and 39/40 on the game assessment test and i passed the safety test fine. I did have a bit more trouble with he shooting test for the knelt of sticks but this was stopped when i borrowed an extra long harris bipod (i only have the short one) from another member that soon solved the problem (mental not to buy one of these). So anyway i am over the moon to have passed it and would thoroughly recommend the course to anyone looking at doing it

glad you have money to waste, had a friend who did it to be a trained hunter (i would say a hunter is someone who brings food home to eat)well this person could not shoot deer in the correct place, could not gralloch deer properly, did not know how to dress deer out in the larder so i for one would not eat anything he hunted and because he paid for a bit off paper he was more qualified than me at hunting.keep lining peoples pockets if you like i will not be doing it.and how can you learn to be a trained " hunter" in a classroom? if you are someone who has not shot before until you do the dsc 1 and you walk away with a piece of paper to say "trained hunter" and not even shot at a beast before.

Cheers for the encouragement  FEOs down are way like you to have it and i have shot deer before but am still learning and thought DSC1 would be a good way to do this.

there is no law to say you need a dsc 1 to have a firearms to stalk deer your feo cannot make you have it to posses a rifle. i am not getting at you personally and if you think that i appologies. i personally think dsc qualifications are a waste off time as stated as a ex friend had one and knew little about stalking.

My FEO didn't insist on it and is a very decent chap to deal with and he would grant me most things i ask for its just i am new to stalking and it was recommended to me by several very experience stalkers as a new stalker. I had stalked perviously and taken several beasts and it helped me out to have done it. I would recommend it to people looking to enter the sport and no offence taken

Nobody who takes the time to further their knowledge should be criticised the dsc is a useful resource I took the dsc to add to my cv and to get the meat handling cert and even though I had been shooting deer as part of my job for years I still learnt some valuable info from both the instructors and some of the students 2 of whom where pro stalkers culling many hundred deer to their own guns each year and nobody on the course thought it a waste of time.

Well done groach for taking the time I am sure the things you learnt will stand you in good stead

well done OP

watch this space though. it is only a matter of time before the powers that be WILL INSIST that FAC owners have some reconised training qualification.

I was surprised how many people on mine failed the shooting.

for my mind I couldnt give a toss if I failed to recognise a Chinese Water deer male vs female, given that I live in Scotland and have never seen one let alone shot at one!

what bothered me is that a couple of people on the course aced the exam but couldn't put 3 shots in a very large bull at 100yds and less.

I would like to see more shooting tests in these things personally.

It is after all about making sure you do the job humanely

Hi Guys. My dad said I cannot get a firearms lisence until i am either 18 and own my own house or I have to pay to do my DSC1. I was reading up on doing my DSC1 (because I have more chance of then getting a firearms lisence ASAP becausei am 14 years old) and it says candidates need to be able to prove they are an accurate shot with a legal deer calibre rifle but to handle a rifle dont you need to have a firearms lisence so I was wondering do you need a firearms lisence to do your DSC1 or not? Many Thanks, Will.
