I have a 17 week old lurcher puppy and trainings going really well, sit, lay down and recall. But if i dont have a treat he will NOT recall. but if he knows i have treats in my pocket the second i shout him he will stop whatever he is doing and rocket straight over to me. its not annoying that he doesnt come back its just annoying that he knows what it means and just ignores me. Obviously at some point i wont have a pocket full of treats and will need to get him back before he hurts himself or something. Any advice on how to ween him off treats would be very helpful. Also, any advice on retrieve training would help.

This is my first lurcher so expect lots more questions like this :)

cheers, aaron.

He is only 17 weeks old pal. Why do you want to wean him off, he is a meer child wanting to play but the thought of a toffee, sweet etc, is to much... He sounds find to me, just keep up recalling him with the treats. You could be using them as far as him being double that age... And why do you think he is going to hurt himself, and what breed is he?

I read the other day that they can get to set in there ways with the treats and will get stubborn and not come when older. im thinking along the lines of if he wandered into a field with a combine and theres alot of people walking there staffs that have a go at anything round here. was told he is a saluki x greyhound with a bit of collie. As i said this is my first lurcher so its all a bit hit and miss.

Thanks very much for the reply mate.

Aaron.

Nah,, you read wrong, especially at that age. All you have to do is shorten the amount on treats you give, not giving him one everytime but every other. Get him interested in a toy, ball etc.. then adventually you'l be able to swap the treats for the ball..... Saluki's are known by some people as 2fields away saluki's, i think that says it all, just keep on top of it, and dont smack him if he doesnt come back....

It's a good start that he recalls well when you have treats. Use this, but even though you have the treat in your hand or pocket, don't actually give him the treat every time - start off with a high percentage of rewards for recall and lower the percentage over time. And try to be completely random about it. It's the taking a chance that he will get a treat that should generate a stronger response.
