Im after a bushing dog to help move game for my lurcher,

Iv been offered a Brittany spaniel, I know people shoot birds over them and they are used for falconary as they point.

What do you lads think, would it be a suitable breed for my needs?

Daveo,

Not wishing to hijack your thread, but this is a query which I have an interest in

i have a brittany bitch,i used to work her with hawks but now i only work her with the bullx,i can only comment on my dog, shes probably the best dog for flushing out game that ive ever seen never mind owned, she makes a springer look lethargic, shes 7 yr old and youd swear she was 18mth,when shes out working she is relentless she works the ground at a fair old speed and she misses feck all,i cant fault em mate  the only problem ive had with mine is ive tried to breed off her for the last 3 yrs,i think shes a fecking lesbian

The Britt is an awesome hunting dog, got a big engine in them and energy to burn, If i had the chance I would go with one, most probably over a springer, alot of britt x's are popping up also, springer/britt would be good, cocker/britt..

hopefully more respond, and craigyboy wish you look with lining the bitch, time is passing now,out of interest what did you want to put to her?

She is 7 weeks.

She will needs lots of energy to manage the days out hunting....

Im hoping to use her to flush for the gun and retrive, to ferret and to find game for the lurcher...

She has had a rough start but now she is coming out of hereslf.

Hello Dave

I had a dog Brit for 13 years and used him for Falconry.

He was excellent at finding and pointing Pheasants but did work cover like a Springer would.

I loved him and caught lots of game over him but I would not say he was a good bushing dog - me mate had a bitch that was the same.

Both would point anything that sat, but would not enter large brambles that were difficult to work.

A bit head strong too, but absolute tiresome hunters.

Good luck

Terry

can't wait to hear how this one comes on, hopefully she will be good dave, and will be a bramble basher for you, the key is not to over match her with heavy stuff too young, let her go in on her own will.

is she bobtailed and what have you called her??

Get more images up Britt owners

No she has like a half tail, half of the pups in the litter had bob tails.

my daughter has called her maggie! I wanted Tess......

Terrys, time will tell mate. all i can do is try her.

Cheers for the replies Fellas.

This is Jake,he is just over two,and i would not swap him.I looked into all the gun dogs and decided a Brittany was for me,and i think i made the right choice.

He would work until he drops, loves to be in the rough,he retrieves those rabbits 100m away as i lay there with the hmr in the sun,and will always find the pigeon that landed in the woods,he is a bit rough mouthed with the pigeons but i breast them anyway. He acts differently with the shotgun, stays in close, goes into stealth mode, compared to the rifle where he pushes out a bit.

He can be pig headed and sometimes pretend he has not heard you,and if he decides he wont do it then you might as well give up.He acts like he is a puppy still, and loves the family spoiling him.

Any one thinking of a Brittany will not regret it,but be prepared they like to be out,and Jake will find any mud or water in the vicinity, they think everything is a game, and have a brilliant nose on them.

Sorry craigyboy, but Jake no longer has the "tools"to be a dad, he has some pups out there to carry his pedigree on, but I weighed it all up and decided to take the cancer risk out, Sometimes I think I would like one of his pups, but there will only be one Jake, they broke the mould with him.

It's always worth looking on the Brittany spaniels uk website, if you register you can see liniage of the dogs, you may find a suitable dog to cover your bitch.

Seen a few working with hawks over the years but only on open moorland were they were awsome in finding rabbits in rushes and long grass going on the point [bANNED TEXT] a rabbit was located giving the owner of the b.o.p to position himself for the slip.I have been told by the owners of these dogs their not as good as springers in heavy cover.

she's a fine britt mate, in your situation I would look to putting a springer across her, forget about the stupid designer names and i think there will be more working springers around you then britts, I would also try different studs to her, until the damage is done so to speak.. wish you Luck Craig, and agree the britt dog is a belter, think you may regret not having a pup out of him when the time comes.
