Ideation 8,216
I backed the hound up as i said every pure hounds a different beast to the next i have seen hundreds as a parader and some could run 800yrd races twice a week even though no one obviously ever races a hound over 800yrds twice a week but some would have happily most lurchers are only running 100-200 max each slip with a break inbetween so a hound of that capability could do easy ten 100yrd slips getting its break inbetween. As for the whippet coment i have owned them all my life and ill never have a kennel without a couple i can walk all day ferreting hills and they will still be happy to take the evening walk with my mothers pets well the ones who made retirement . i rate the whippet highly as a more than capable and versatile little dog with as much if not more in some case's capability than a lurcher of the same size i also think if there were as many pure bred hounds worked it would be inevetable some would be more capable than any lurcher although you could go through 20 and not have one worth talking about nowadays. I agree with you up to a point seen some really good whippet and Greys work well. But the the whole reason the lurcher evolved into these x's was largely due to the shortcomings of the aforementioned breeds ie stamina lack of coat etc. Not entirely true. Originally the greyhound was THE coursing and hunting dog of choice, and would be used to tackle all quarry, there were several 'types' of greyhound, some regional, i.e 'Scotch greyhound'. They were all superb hunting dogs. When Greyhound racing became big, many of the attributes that had made them good hunting dogs were bred out in favour of traits handy for racing, so stamina went, and good coat, good feet, gameness etc and the focus was for sprint ability, pure speed etc. Same goes for the show world. Hence why folk a long time ago started to look further afield for blood to put into their greyhounds to get back some of what was lost. . . . . i.e Saluki for stamina etc. The Lurcher probably evolved as a reaction to certain game/dog laws that banned any common man from owning a running dog and hence they were bred with herding dogs etc to change their appearence and make them less obvious. ferreter.al 22
my mate once had a collie x that could shift but just ran out of steam on long runs, once saw it colapse after a fairly short run on a hare but it was fine for a few bunnies,it didnt stay long and ended up in a pet home. feed the bear 13
only saying what i seen lads Better watch what your doing mate.... bold statements like that will see you getting asked your hunting credentials, followed by a challenge of dogs and then an instant ban Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
I totaly agree but in all fairness the greyhound was used as any lurcher is today before the track days they are a diff type nowadays and i do agree thats why the introduction of other dogs and the lurcher was done but there would have been a time any greyhound could have caught a rabbit a hare and tackle a fox now and then with ease but them days are gone . Great post! That is the truth. Quote Link to post

You should know mate, your stags are a lot closer to what our greys used to be like, and are of course descended from the running dogs / greyhounds taken from the u.k etc to the states a long time ago.
