matt_hooks 188
Chaz, you've met me, you know I'm not interested in numbers, or trophies. I shoot animals that are pests. I'm quite happy to sit and watch a pair of rabbits messing around outside their warren if they are not a pest issue. However certain animals, mink included, do untold damage to our native wildlife and need to be controlled hard. Yes I've seen mink hunt, many a time, and yes they're good at it and a joy to watch, perhaps too good! Would I shoot a fox? If it was a pest. I think they are great animals, but if they are causing damage to a farmers animals and he asks me to deal with them, then yes I'll shoot them. Comparing a mink to a pine marten is like comparing a feral cat to a wild cat. Yeah, they might look similar, but one is a native species, and is hugely endangered, while the other is an indiscriminate killer and frankly a pest. I love fishing too, for the same reason I love hunting. It gives me a chance to get out in the countryside, "commune with nature" if you will, and is a chance to get away from the stresses of modern life. I don't care if I shoot anything, or catch anything, or if I draw a blank. I'm not interested in killing for the sake of killing either. You won't see many pictures of animals I've shot, because I don't think it's respectful of the quarry. Most of what I shoot I eat, including squirrels. I wouldn't eat a scavenger like a mink or rat though, as they are at that point in the foodchain where all the poisons amass. I try not to judge others as to how they act. If they want to show pictures of their quarry that's fine by me, I'm not going to take offence. And if someone chooses not to shoot mink that's also up to them, but I have seen a huge heronry destroyed by a pair of mink. They broke every egg, killed every young heron, and also killed a couple of adults. Did they eat any? They dragged one of the young a little way, ate a leg and the brains, and that was it. A pine marten might do the same, if there are any of them around. Mink are like the american signal cray, or the grey squirrel. They are bigger, stronger and better predators than their native cousins, and so they displace them from the foodchain and put our native species at risk. You choose not to shoot them Chaz, I choose to shoot them. Doesn't make either of us a better hunter! Quote Link to post
