how are yous doing just looking for some advice on my harris he's 20 wk old, trainig him at the mo and lately he wont land on my glove when im flying him. instead he flys towards me at full speed and tries to grab the food and head back to where he's been perched. only started doing this the last week or so.... this is my first bird and im begining to get fairly stressed wit him. any help would be appreciated

thanks in advance

What weight was the bird when he was flying to the glove BEFORE! He started snatching? Was the bird following on ON the creance before you flew him free?

how are you doing friend. he was 1lb 8oz before he started the snatching messin.when u say following on do you mean was he following me? say the creance was 30ft i wouldnt get the full length of it unwrapped before he would come flying after me.is that what u mean by following on??

What I mean by " Following-on is , Was he following you as you walk, out in an open field, free from obstacles and snags, on a 30yrd-40yrd creance simulating free flight, but still leaving you in control if things go wrong. He needs to be coming when called,

ie: Whistled, not just to the glove. Idealy leap-frogging you as you walk. Was he doing this at 1lb 8oz? If so take him back up to that weight and start again. The difference between flying weight hunting weight is a fraction of an ounce.

Do you use a lure with him? A plain falcon lure is all you need. Again he should respond immediately when the lure is thrown out. It gives you that extra little peace of mind when you are out hawking.

eh im trying to think now, no he wasnt doing that(following on). i would put him on his perch and id start to unwrap the creance . he wud fly to me before i had it unravelled all the way. if i didnt raise the glove he would double back to the perch.tonight i had him on the creance in my back garden and he flew to the glove no snatching whatsoever.i weighed him before feeding him and he was 1lb 7oz.

to be honest im not too sure if i was the weight thing sorted.

i have a bunny lure havent tried him on it yet because i knew there was somthing wrong when he woulnt land on the glove.

ta for the help..

When you give him the dummy bunny for the first time go back and start off close in. Remember it is a new thing to him. don't expect him to come a great distance to the dummy first time. start close in and work out! Good luck!!!

Giving advice is a dangerous thing to do....but heres a thought for you keep him at the wieght he was on when he was behaving himself but fly him later in the day than normal. They will be a little more desperate to eat if they know the daylight is going and they havent fed....same applys to entering to quarry. Dont let the bird train you!!! Harris are smart birds and dont miss a trick
