marlin vs 7
I've never understood why folk keep collies in pet environments. The breed is the end product of hundreds of generations of selective breeding to produce an agricultural tool. There's nothing pet about them. I agree my neighbour got one from a farm as a pup, and he was the most vicous house dog i've ever seen, they didn't get rid of him untill he he attacked their daughter as she sat watching television, and she had been bitten by him twice before and blamed her for handling him roughly. Idiots like that boil my piss. Dogs brought up with kids have to be able to put up with a bit of rough and tumble, that's not to say kids shouldn't be taught to respect the dogs for what they are though. One angry nip from any dog of mine too one of my kids would result in a one way trip to the vets.. I have also made it very clear to my kids that should such a scenario happen and it be down to them, then they'd be the ones to blame...
RicW 67
I see that the dog was "timid". They're the ones to watch. Push too hard and it's a cornered rat job. Ric
"Earth!" 503
they were often unpredictable, but to be fair, they weren't there to be 'child friendly'....they were there to do a specific job. Exactly, they have aggression because it's needed to do their job. They don't move sheep about by asking them politely... And as i keep telling the kids..dogs cant say leave me alone or dont do that or you are hurting me,they nip or in some instances go in for(dare i say it)the kill.. education is the way but not always in the case of children.. MuttleMcTuttle 21
Poor kid... However, I disagree that collies cannot be good pets. I grew up with working dogs, and part of their job was to look after us kids. Okay, they were a bit sharp with strangers, but we were brought up to respect the dogs and not maul them around. The dogs I have now do not work anymore - they came from a working and trialling background, and have worked sheep a few years back, but now they are really just pets. They are fairly even tempered, and the bitch was a Pets As Therapy dog when she was younger, but I still would never trust them with a little kid. But then I wouldn't trust any dog in an unfamiliar situation. Many collies are snappy through nervousness, and they don't suffer fools gladly. A lot of pet collies do not get the exercise, mental stimulation, or training that they need. They excel at obedience, agility, flyball, etc, and this is what they need if they cannot work stock. A bored collie can very quickly turn into a sheep killer, although gripping sheep is something that is erm... discouraged in working dogs. Collies should be treated with respect, however well you know them, but in the right hands they can make super companion dogs. It's not fair to tar them all with the same brush. watchman 256
really feel for the kid and the the parents for what they have gone through, this really just highlights the fact that no matter what a dog cannot be trusted 100% with children,i regularly hear people state "i trust my dog with children no matter what, even let them pull the dog about as toddlers and hes never looked at them"yeah until one fatal day when that goes to shit and by then its to late the damage has been done. i also think its some sort of macho thing when people refer to their dog as 100% child friendly, you know the "my dog wouldn't hurt a fly" kind of sort,at the end of the day it should be respected and treated as such.i have never put my kids in a position with any of my dogs over the years that iv been uncomfortable with or jeopardised their safety, never trust any dog 100% fact
The Seeker 3,048
I agree totally with what's being said you can never trust a child with a dog (or any large pet for that matter) 100%, I remember as a kid delivering news papers, this house had a collie never a problem until one day I posted the news paper through the door walking back down the path and felt a massive pain, the dog had come up behind me not made a sound bit me on the leg then just ran off.....no barking nothing
"Earth!" 503
Trust nothing 100% that pumps its own blood around its body, not even people.. Anything or anyone can have an off day,FACT!!! Any dog that shows aggression OR hatred to a child require a lump of lead, the same should be done to people but the law would prefer to tell them off and put a fecking bracelet around their ankle or lock them up for a while because when they are released they are a changed person.... what utter bollox, shoot the filthy b*****ds! brassneck 128
poor kid . over the years ive had lots of dogs of different breeeds , ive also got 9 kids , they are never allowed to be unsupervised . i trust my dogs 99% round kids/people but its the 1% that worrys me . kids will be kids and a dog mite not take kindly to having a poke in the eye or its ears pulled . i think its rare a dog turns for no reason that why i dont even present an oppurtunity for anything to happen , id never fogive myself tbf . about 7years ago my 12st rottie dog decided to have a pop at me , kids and freinds were in paddling pool, i picked up my 8yr old daughter out the water only to find the fecka hanging off my thigh . what then happened was not good , it ended with me having 6 different sets of bite wounds and broken arm and a fair few stitches , theres many theories of the dogs motives but at end of day could of been 1 of me kids . Cold Ethyl 63
One way trip to the vets for any dog here that bites or attacks a kid end of story cos i could never live with the outcome if you didnt.Parents need to be educated too though i came out from the local shop one day to find a young boy 2 or 3 years old sticking his finger in my dogs eye and up his nose I raised my voice a bit and said you best be careful or you will end up getting badly bitten or killed laddie.Women behind me pipes up Ive told him hunners o times no tae annoy the dogs an that turns out she the dozy bint was his mum and had been standing watching him do it .My kids feet wouldnt have touched the floor if theyd done something like that but the wean disnae listen lol.Ive seen parents think its funny when their kids are clearly hurting the dog and its making it clear its not happy and theyre laughing but dog wont do anything. Then theres dogs who have snapped twice before owner sees what happens and tells you its ok cos she loves kids then it goes on two ragdoll a 2 year old kid by the face.Makes you wonder
