TOMO 26,255
All those thousands of rabbits my old couring dog cought up the rugged yorkshire dales , must have been a dream Tomo, never once did i say it wasnt possible..... never once.... As my dogs do it up there regular.... T howley has just sold a good dog, in fact he said it was the best bitch he has ever seen, and he's seen alot hasnt he mate... Do you think it would have been worth that money, had he took the buyer to watch it up there!! Why do people twist things around on here.... And who ever mentioned BLUE HARES on rugged moorland, well come on, a fit doberman could catch them! nobodys twisting things round, this is what you wrote you bring an out and out fen dog(running 3 in 3) to my neck of the woods mate, and it would do nothing apart from break its legs!! so my reply was to above statement Quote Link to post

brianL84 11
yes, how can you be confused!! A saluki/grey would be shit around here mate, break its legs! yet dynamite on the fens and other flats... Can someone pls explain to this man.... totaly agree mate i have seen it with my own eyes .my friend moved down and her dog was a total hare dog running big parks but when the dog came down here it was lost for a while but in all fairness the dog did adapt and started doing quite well but i like a good old lurcher x lurcher personaly a big strong type that can turn its hand to most things that keeps me happy Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
All this talk of good dogs will catch anywhere and adapt their running styles is pish. Certain crosses don't have the physical capability to catch up here, much the same as a beddy whippet wouldn't catch on the flats. Dogs for jobs, and in most parts up here my money would be on the collie whippet greyhound crosses. Keep your saluki greyhounds for land they have the chance to build up their stride. A smart dog up here will nip a hare out its seat in a rashy park here. Which to me is every bit as satisfying as a 2 minute course. Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
Just to add all the good hare dogs I have witnessed had saluki blood somewhere in the makeup. Just not as evident as your big land dogs. FTB Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Interesting topic..... I remember one day we were in scotland with the saluki greys and the bag was 8 browns and 11 white (if i can remember correctly). So it can be done single handed. I think its a bit of a broad statement to say that no saluki/greys cannot catch on the rugged land. I have seen it with my own eyes, as well as photographed it too.... Happy Hunting....JD Quote Link to post
jakk 6
its not a case of what is better but what is suited. Sure you could run a saluki/ grey on the moors etc but that isn't what it is bred to excel at so why buy and run a dog that would be at a disadvantage? ROBERTO M 350
I have ran hares from just outside london to Perth , with fen bred dogs and to be honest the further north we went the dogs made easy work of the hares , even the dogs that couldnt hack the big land killed plenty hares once over the border !! A good dog will kill hares any were , thats a fact ! Edited September 11, 2010 by ROBERTO M 4 Quote Link to post

That's got to be the biggest load of pish I've ever had the misfortune of reading.... Quote Link to post
