the colonel 83
So from what you say a fen bred dog is more suited to run the further north you go??? That's got to be the biggest load of pish I've ever had the misfortune of reading.... I would agree with that. I have read the post a few times, and still cannot make any sense from it. FTB Same here mate...... I reckon he is just trying to dis the Scottish hare. Quote Link to post
the colonel 83
what he is saying is that dogs that ain't bred for the fens won't catch on the fens, dogs bred for fens will catch anywhere!surely even you can understand that!!! believe me, he knows what he's talking about. feed the bear 13
feed the bear, you look mighty proud in that pick. carrying a quarter grown leveret you killed!!! First of all colon, how can you tell "I'm" looking proud in the picture since you can't see my head? Secondly, it isn't me in the picture and thirdly, the reason the picture is there is to make the very point you just did against the so called best dogs in the world!!! Well done you Quote Link to post

feed the bear 13
Right, here is my tuppence worth in the errr debacle..... If you have a good dog which has a good balance of both speed and stamina then theoretically, it should catch hares on any ground where others catch them... However, if you have a speed bomb which can catch hares in tight fields but burns out fast then in larger fields, if the hare can avoid getting caught fast stands a good chance of out running said dog... A hare has to slow down to go under gates etc and a lot of them are caught trying to escape a field. Same applies if you have a plodder type saluki, its ok in large areas with no escape routes for the hare where it can errr chase the hare for several minutes without any fear of escape. The same dog wouldn't stand a chance in a tight field where the hare would be off and out of sight before the fen dog had got into his rather slow stride. So, getting the balance of speed and stamina is critical if you want a dog which can catch anywhere.... just cos a dog can course for 7 minutes doesn't make it a good dog. Quote Link to post

Yeah, totally agree and well worded.... The only thing you seem to have missed out is uncomfatable running for the hardest of dogs, say, scree, mountain sides, steep baby heads moorland.. A big 28" speed merchant would not catch over this type of ground...unless your running the blue hare ! before you all jump on.. Quote Link to post
