Whippet barking

Recommended Posts

Some whippets yap, some don't.... you need to be patient and try to find a place where the dog has a good chance of catching, putting all the odds in the dogs favour. Its not the end of the world if the dog does the odd yap out of frustration. My whippet used to yap more when he was younger, not so much as he got older. It was more often in small fields, not so much in open land. Was never a problem for me, helped keep me on my toes. atb

Only ever had the problem once with my whippets and it was when one of my bitchs was heavy and unfit once i took a bit weight of her she silenced again. Would also try not to run him with another dog as that in my opinion will just cause more yapping as like was stated the older more seasoned dog will get in first and could cause more frustration . Should ease up with a couple of easy catch's mate . I know a lad with a handy wee bitch she works the lamp spot on but daytime bolters she is best left in the van cause she screems her tits of the whole time and wont go in while another dogs on the chase she sits back screeming she is a wee thing under 18" but weird how she does it yets as silent as a mouse on the beam .

Hi

When out walking my 10 month out whippet(My first dog), it is quite often that he discovers himself or i see a bunny for him to chase. Its becoming frustrating that he gets very close, but not close enough. I understand that hes only young and still learning but the thing that i believe is letting him down is the fact that he barks when chasing.

It appeared at first that it was an excited bark, but now i think its becoming aggressive because he is becoming frustrated when he doesnt catch a rabbit.

He is a very game dog and doesnt give up easily, but the cover at the minute is very thick and he does everything alone.

My questions are.....

Has anybody else had problems with their dog barking after rabbits? Is it a problem? What can i do to try and stop it or will it disappear over time?

Thank you

my dog yaps but not all the time i know a f****d up by starting him early and sometimes stupid slips but i'll learn by my mistakes the other nite he ran a rabbit up and down the hedgerow and he never yapped once .but he chassed a big rabbit the other nite and yapped like mad right near some trees and it echoed realy bad i was pretty pissed off good job i was on some permission :whistling: but he still puts things in the bag so i'll just put up with it i couldn't part with him any way .

i tried leaving him for a bit as well but it never worked not saying yours wont though

Yeh personally i cant see him changing, but hes my first dog, i will learn from it, as maybe i shouldnt of let him off the lead so young, because he used to chase the rabbits where i walk, but with the cover and his lack of age he had no chance, adding to the problem. You live and learn, but not writing the him off just yet, he hasnt had a proper nights work yet lol cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a quick update, the dog is now 1 year old. He hasnt had a proper nights lamping as i have good looking land, but its a bit scarce for bunnys. But i take him on some other land just having a mooch with my ferret. I havent been netting the holes, as i would rather just see them run with the dog in close pursuit. Anyway, hes had a few good runs, but is getting caught out by the cover. He caught one last time i took him out last week with the ferret, and when i took him today, i bolted 4 bunnys for him, and i didnt hear a single yap out of him!!

I hope i havent spoke to soon, but just thought i would update people who took the time to reply to my topic.

Cheers
