A day out with the Dogs

Well after my fiasco with the lamping the other night it was time to chill out with the dogs and a couple of friends of mine. An early start was in order as we had a fare distance to travel. First port of call was to pick up Catchers lad and his two dogs. Quick phone call to check he was up and ready and had secured a ferret for the day. Phone answered by a tired sounding young man who had obviously just fell out of bed. Give me time to get ready he asks me ....OK twenty minutes later I arrive to pick him up, still mucking about I then discover he has not been able to reach his mate to organise a ferret.

 

Dont worry says he it'll be ok to just take it then he springs another surprise there's no bloody ferret box . So another 10-15mins wasted while we track down a box.

 

Eventually we get sorted and head off to pick Scoop&Dig up then we're of to my son's to pick my old dog Blaze up.

 

Finally we get to the ground we're ferreting and start off.

 

Old blaze marks the first warren and we set up the dogs for the first bolter. Scoops dog Clint is first of the mark with a fine catch and a spectacular roll with bunny in mouth . Catcher JNR is next of the mark with a half grown hopper that had the misfortune to pop out a hole under the dogs nose.

 

Clint takes another easy bolter then we move on. Missed a few in between but its not about numbers today it's about getting the dogs tuned in especially Scoop & Catchers dogs who will be starting their first season.

 

My dog is next of the mark with another fine take and tumble.

 

We then moved to another part of the ground and began to net up to do a bit of proper ferreting. Strange thing was that despite a number of solid marks the rabbits didn't bolt. This wasn't a case of false marking as we even saw rabbits going into the warrens we netted up...strange!

 

Cut short the day as Catcher's lad had a migraine but it was enjoyable and we'll do it again soon.

They might look easy mate but they run very deep and a lot of work for one ferret

 

 

Why you only using one ferret mate? Well they'l be alot easier than the deep ones we have on the moors..... at least it is flat, and you can see all what is happening..
