i have just had to give a friend of mine the best dog i have ever owned.the lakeland bitch in question was mustard on rabbits and exelled on rats, the problem was that she started going to ground.now that i am thinking about the coming ratting season i am without my best ratter.i have just read an interesting thread on whippet x terrier matings i quite fancy this may make a good ratter .your opinions will be gratefully recieved.if the feed back is good i may be looking to buy one if anyone has one for sale ,preferably working but would also consider a pup thankyou for your time

hi ive a 3/4 whippet 1/8 grey 1/8 deerhound 21" to shoulder and she s not very good hares pre ban or rabbits as she mouths them when she s sick of the course ,she s 8 nearly 9 now and i dont use her on rabbits anymore but if i do go ratting i take her she is like a terrier when on rats she goes mental but thats all she s ever excelled in ,so yeh whippet x would be ideal mate

depends what sort of area you are ratting in ie ditches, water courses and such like, the whippet has a great nose and good speed off the mark just that much quicker so i would imagine crossing one with a good ratting terrier would make a great little dog,my mate has a russell cross spaniel and its coming along great, but theres no competition between the small lurchers and whippet so something in between the two would be very handy.
