road work, biking and if you are luky enough to have some nice hunting up land which holds plenty of game then this gets the dog in tune depending on how fast your dog works cover, but theres nothing better than doing the actual lamping of rabbits to get the dogs fit, the more time you are out and the more runs you are getting then the dogs guna run itself fit simple realy. hope this helps

Wrm them up first with a decent walk/run off the lead then maybe a nice QUIET lane and a few miles behind the motor at a nice pace (15mph) then maybe a few shortish runs at 20-25 mph but NOT TOO MUCH, especially for a young dog.

As MarkG says, run 'em to peak fitness but they do need a base level of fitness.

HTH. Cheers, D.

to be honest mate, the only fitness is lamping fit in my eyes, fair enough getting them prepared to start with etc, ie walks and road work, following the car does the dog good, but the only fitness for me is lamping fit.

yep the only way to get them to peak fitness is lamping, you can do all the road work and other types of preperation but at the end of the day it will never get them lamp fit.

You need any dog half fit before a good nights lamping otherwise something could give or snap usualy cramps and muscle/tendon damage, it all good and well trying to run them fit but you cant beat at least 6wks of vigorous excercise with a good blast about on the quad at 10mph with a good few races inbetween, and the fitter they get the more races inbetween.

20 to 25 mph your dogs must toppers if uve got them running that fast lyk

most lurchers can run faster than that, whilst running the dogs behind the motor for a few miles nice and steady, you can do a few sprints as well, most days i will have them running around 40 mph for a couple hundred metres. then back down to a trot

Bang on the nail there Tomo 35/40mph is not unusual..the dogs i play with can keep up with the bike up to around the 35/40mph mark but that is about the top speed of the bike, the dogs do a good 200yrd run each time at that speed..then back down to 10mph with pisses and shits inbetween then back to full speed again, it's a lot better than trying to do it th lazy way and run them fit, seen dogs drop muscle no end of time running hard unfit also seen a PTS job done on a good bitch after she snapped her tendon of her hock, much better to be fit at the start of the season than unfit.

If you do it right they will be no problem and if you have worked and trained a few it should all fall into place, if you do it right they will be no sore feet or pad damage,it's not rocket science, ,slow and easy to start with then progress to your dogs ability.

were do you do this with your dogs?.sounds great but to much traffic round my way.not that i am on the full on exercise yet.my dog is 11 month old now and doing 6 to 7 miles a night next to me push bike at a steady trot and about 1 to 2 miles free roaming in the mornings.i only lamped her 3 times.she done well.but not out for long cos i dont like doing to much with her and always try to finish on a catch.the exersise i do with her seems like nothing now.shes not even panting when she gets back.but from some of the advice ive chose to take of here i am being causious not to over do it at her age.cheers for replys  atb.mat

I dont drive so i trot the dog with the push bike for an hour every morning walk them at nite for 2 hours on hills and throw a ball down constantly almost was out the other day first day i run high ground on steep slopes dogs had been lay up for a bit and i got 2 out of 10 couldnt beleive the diffrence in stamina since last season so have uped the training again if the ground had been flat it would have been different but i have to show face on this land to keep it or it would have been a month before i hit it .
