HARD but fast?

Thanks for the replys guys...

I dont think many dogs could hunt the terrain localy to me at the moment. It is the worst i have ever seen. One thing that often comes up when talking to guys over here about Coyote killing dogs, is the weight of a dog. Although my Staghounds are a decent size (bewteen 28" and 30", but i think the bitch has lots more to grow, and think she could reach a huge height) they are not as heavy as you would think...Plus they have the best feet i have seen. Im not trying to big these dogs up or anything, but when i get some pics of there feet, you would think they would belong on a collie!..lol.

The general thing over here is to slip three or four dogs on to one Yote, but it seems to be one or two "made" dogs, with one or two pups of about seven months. It is regarded as very rare to get a dog that can kill Coyotes single handed, and they are called real good dogs, if you can use just two. Maybe it has been my up bringing back home, but i just 'aint to keen on slipping loads of dogs on one thing!..lol.

One time i watched a video of my male pups mum working Coyote. She is a smallish bitch, but has the heart of a lion! She catches the Yote and slams into him, but has him across the top of the back. She didnt look much bigger than the Coyote!..lol...It was obvious that yote wasnt going anywhere, but it would of been unfair (and cruel) to let it continue, so another was slipped, who can only be described as a canine chain-saw!..lol..he is my male pups uncle, but is half Bull! I think the Coyoe died of fright when he saw this thing coming..i would have!..lol.

They just seem to get the real good around the throat! Its been bred into them, you know? I would love to try a Lurcher from back home on Coyote, just to see what would happen. Maybe i will one day? The feet do worry me on some bull cross' though.

Kane, you are talking about running dogs of a Rig, which seems to be the most common method of hunting them out here.

I think alot of second rate dogs are kept because of people hunting like this. Its just an idea though, of course...i havent been out here long enough, and done enough to be sure of anything after all!

But when a yote is spotted, SOME people drive right up to them and slip the dogs after chasing the poor blighter for two miles! Not very sporting, but Coyotes out here are like rats back home...it seems no one likes them!..lol.

The guy i got my stock from will slip his dogs at 1/4 of a mile, and the chase could be real long!...of course the dogs tire quicker, but they are, in my eyes TESTED more than a dog that has only to run 20 yards to a tired Yote and kill it. Its been interesting reading your replys guys, thanks alot!

KYE, THERE IS ONE MORE WAY I THINK WOULD BE USEFUL, AND ITS NO DIFFERENT FROM CALLING THEM IN , AND THATS USING A DECOY DOG, I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IN SOME PARTS OFF THE STATES , BITCHES ARE USED TO BRING COYOTE,S INTO RANGE FOR THE GUN, WHY NOT A COMBINATION OFF THIS ,AND A COYOTE HOUND OF YOUR CHOOSING, THIS IN MY EYE,S , IS A SPORTING WAY ,OF TAKING COYOTE, I MEAN IF THEY ARE CLASSED AS VERMIN, THEN EVERYTHING GOES, AND I THINKS THAT THIS COULD BE A EXCITING WAY OFF HUNTING THEM ,MUCH BETTER THAN CHASING THEM IN MOTORS FOR MILES ON END, IMAGINE THE PLEASURE OFF TRAINING 2 DOGS ,TO WORK IN UNION, FOR A SUCCESSFULL HUNT.

Your right there mate, people do use dogs to "toll" the coyotes within range, and i have seen videos of people getting them to within 15 yards or so! It sure would be a sight to see wouldnt it!? Another method, which can be succesful, is to start a "Midden"...you get fallen stock from farms etc, andleave it out in a big field or somewhere the dogs could get a good chance of a catch. Then, once the Coyotes are used to feeding there, you can sometimes ambush them at the feeding place. I know you get the odd chance when just out mooching. Im sure once i move to a better location the Border Collie will come in handy. She has had a few bayed up in small ravines at the local lake, and she has a real good nose on her. Maybe if there are areas of small wooded spinneys and the like, you could beat them out with terriers and the like, and postion sighthounds at the proper areas. Its all stuff i will have to just try and see if it works!...all the best guys.

Thanks for the replys!

So how do you go about it mate?..Do you hide some where near buy and wait?..or do you just creep up to it?...how long (roughly) before they start to feed on it good and proper?...can you take more than one charlie of it in a session, or does it stur things up a little to much?

cheers mate

There'll be more knowledgeable lads tell you more than I can mate, but I made a midden a couple of years back and all my kills go on there, minus what I need for the freezer. I take most of mine during the day and it's a case of walk up and let the dogs hunt up. There's thick cover surrounding it and as you know, my dogs thrive in there. At night it's a different story as there are pigs everywhere.

Thrive in it!...i didnt know you had a dog with you until the end of the day, when she had to go in the truck!...i just thought the bush's where moveing buy them selves!..lol...cheers mate, i will have to get one going when i move!

Seriously mate, it's a good idea. I chucked a pig on there last year (roadkill...actually it was trainkill) and I found it outside a fox earth and all that was left was the spinal cord and head. They can't resist it.

I wouldnt hesitate to own a Lurcher like that back in the UK. But i dont think any of the real good Coyote dogs have Saluki in them. Ive heard the Bull X grey Saluki X grey is a handy type though. Also, there is a huge difference between a fox and a Coyote. When you think of dogs hunting Coyote, think of sighthounds hunting small german shepards!..lol...Theres a saying that "A coyote is NOT a big fox, he is a small wolf!"...if you know what i mean!?

all the best guys.
