I do it all the time for my fire places, espeacially in the summer when hedges are trimmed. I'll go with a ruck sack and fill up for kindling. If your on common land then by right take the lot. But common land is hard to find these days, or lets say hard to detect wheather it is or not.

 

You'll find that Rangers will leave piles of wood cut at the side of the road on purpose (they can't be arsed to drive back to the yard and lug them off) and mysteriously the logs disappear in the night.

 

Just follow the four f's. You can leagaly pick Fungi, Fruit, Folige and Flowers. Just change one to Firewood.....

Basically if they are not the ones that can be entered with a forklift from every side then you'd be as well as making firewood.
