I think the law is that it belongs to who evers property it falls on. So you could technically be done but i very much doubt they would be that petty. Although it wouldnt suprise me if they was.

i found a huge beech limb that had fell off the tree and some body dragged it to the path so i sawed it up and took it away for logs but someone just told me this is illegal and i can in trouble for it i said no chance but he was serious and an old guy who dont normally take the piss!!! anyone know if its true???

 

I think you sawed it down yourself having a saw with you that was handy

belongs to the land owner but once it drops on the highway, becomes highways problem and if they sort it out they will charge land owner so in a way you are doing both a favour but would'nt stick money on it.
