socks 32,253
whilst i was out walking the pup today i was watching the pup hurtling around the woods ... round trees ver fallen logs skidding on her belly under scrub and just generally enjoying herslef and it got me thinking would anybody else let their young pup do this or would they call them to heal in fear of them getting injured ..... i have allways encoureged my young pups to do this as it sharpens up their movement and reactions and helps with their general supplety (spelling) and every pup i have owned loves this type exercise ... i have noticed that the pups dont seem to enjoy open fields as much and will maybe have one mad dart about then it is down to trotting allong and sniffing here and sniffing there but to me they look bored compared to a good woodland walk ...... i feel that they need both types of walks as they will at some stage need to be able to confidently hurtle through a wood on the tail of a fleeing bunny .... unless you hunt only open moorland of course ...... what do you lot think ?????????? ................. Guest reload
I think it gets them used to all the obstacles they will encounter later life, its all education........ Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
I've always had youngsters with me out and about wherever I go. During the daytime it's easier as there's more than likely not much gear on top. Some of the places I hunt the dog has to have the attributes of a slalom skier going through all of the hazel and haw after bunnies so it makes ense to get them used to it from an early age. skycat 6,173
I deliberately take my pups into woodland, through barbed wire, set aside etc, so they can learn to pick their way through the dangerous/prickly/stingy things: but never with older dogs as then the pups are just tearing about playing and following the big dogs and not looking where they are going. whin 463
cant see the reason to hold pups back i take them with the big dogs walks etc all the time they soon learn game trails and obstacles ,by the time there a year they no whats game etc , tyne my present dog and tess whippet grew are steady as rocks ,ive never had to do much with them, they came on naturaly and have turned out good odgs , lanas pup mhirn has turned out a little bit diff more head strong in strange company but with my own dogs not a problem shees been out from six moons and be in on all sorts ,all the best run them hard feed them right and treat them like heroes Quote Link to post
marko 30
yes go to agree with most comments when lurchers are a certain age they are just mad mine just never stops running, however as said it sharpens them up i have to tell her to cool it a bit sometimes because she can be a lunatic but its just young dogs learning and burning energy which they have plenty of before you know it they get more switched on and conserve energy for other things its all part of learning.
