Weathering Snares

Recommended Posts

Personally I'd rather have a weathered or otherwise snare than a new... although they all still catch, prefer to put the odds in my favour...I like the formula one, gets them perfect and blends in excellent.

A lot of people seem to be switching over to f1 now as it removes the need for petrolium addatives.....i know that the brown gives a nice " green ?" finish after several coats but its back to the same old situation im afraid....cost and availability....all i can say that is if anyone can get this stuff into the uk it seems to be beating the "speed dip" type of product hands down at the moment..may even be worth ganging up on john b (fourteenacre) to see if he could work his magic and locate a few tins... :):)

WELL LADS ,

ITS DEPENDS ON WHERE AND WHAT IAM SNARING .........

I MAINLY SPRAY TO STOP THIEVES , THOUGH I DO SPRAY CERTAIN MINK SNARES FOR CERTAIN SITUATIONS A COLOUR MANY WOULD SHY AWAY FROM ......

...... I ALSO TREAT THEM WITH OTHER " STUFF " FOR CERTAIN WEATHER CONDITIONS

ALL THE BEST

Dark browns the best, but any dark colour works well...I've seen pegandgun put fence snares out for fox, shiney new and give them a quick rub around with mud, which helps blend in them in well, next day fox to account for...Its like rabbit snares, many will say , NO you don't need to weather them, fair enough in winter when its dark when most animals are out and about rabbits/fox but during the lighter months, a blended snare helps a lot... Pegs got some excellent footage as a fine example rabbits running up to fence snares weathered and new snares and rabbits turning off them, there not that stupid all the time, same as foxes.... I don't think the american trappers would be so keen on hiding scents and blending in snares, using various products at additional cost to themselves, if it didn't put the odds in their favour ..... People can stick to nice shiney snares, they will still catch game...but you will catch more putting the odds in your favour...

IAN ,

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HERE AND THE STATES IS OUR FOXES AND RABBITS OFTEN CRAWL UNDER AND THROUGH SHINY FENCING MANY TIMES , EVERY DAY OF THEIR LIVES .......

THE SHEER LAND MASS OF THE STATES DICTATES THAT MANY FURBEARERS DONT COME ACROSS EITHER NEW FENCING OR HUMAN SCENTS ON A REGULAR BASIS .....

COUPLE TO THAT .... THE FACT THAT MANY OF OUR YANKIE TRAPPING COUSINS ARE AS ADEPT AT CATCHING GREENHORNS WITH THEIR " SUPERDUPPER REALLY CANNOT MISS LURES " ADVERTISEMENTS

AND YOU HAVE A WHOLE DIFFERENT " BEAST "

I AGREE .........

SOME ANIMALS WILL TURN FROM A SNARE .... AND AFTER VIEWING P&Gs FOOTAGE I WAS NOT CONVINCED THAT IT WAS THE SNARE AND NOT THE NEWLY LAID SNARE , ALONG WITH SCENT ALA P&G !

ONE OF THE FIRST LESSONS OLD G.W. KNOCKED HOME WAS THAT FACT THAT SNARES SHOULD BE OUT EARLY , TO GIVE A BETTER CHANCE OF A KILL ONCE THE SCENT OF THE TRAPPER HAS DISIPATED

ALL THE BEST

Why piss about with snares if you want rid of them stick a mixy down.. :whistling::laugh: .

Whatever floats your boat :D

Back on subject... I agree DW, but what about open snares in woodland, tractor trails in standing crop, etc... It does help, of that I'm positive, as well as hiding from the human elements... Although you mention scent, I 100% agree thats one of the main obstacles by far.. If I put rabbit snares down, I leave them over 4 to 5 days anyway, weather, etc all play a part, snares may not be touched the first night, maybe the second, maybe third...others will catch over night...One thing about setting rabbit snares that higher up on jump throughs is they are commited, so scents never going to bother them...but it definitely plays a major part, even more on fencelines I'd say..

Good topic anyway, I'm sure people have many more related replies... :)

WELL IAN ,

WE KNOW ITS NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT THE BEST NIGHTS FOR A GOOD KILL OF CONYS ARE THE BEST NIGHTS FOR LAMPING !

DARK AND SCENTLESS ....... BOTH OPTIONS COVERED !!

MANY RABBITS OUT DAYLIGHT FEEDING IN SHORTER GRASS , HAVENT THE SAME AMOUNT OF ALERTNESS [ IF THATS THE RIGHT WORD FOR IT ]AS HE CAN SEE AROUND HIMSELF FOR DANGER , ... NO SHORT SPURTS . OR MAD DASHES AT THE SLIGHTEST SOUND ,....

THESE TO ME ARE THE RABBITS THAT WILL SHY AWAY FROM THE SHINY OR SCENT RIDDEN SNARE ......IVE SEEN A FEW MYSELF

ONE IN PARTICULAR LAST SEASON I WATCHED STOP DEAD AND JUMP AROUND A PEGGED SNARE ON A GOOD RUN ...... ONLY TO GET CAUGHT ON THE SAME RUN 30 YDS DOWN THE LINE ,.....

BOTH SNARES WERE THE SAME AND WERE WEATHERED THROUGH WORK , THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THE SCENT FACTOR ........

ALL THE BEST

Yeh its suprising what can affect snares sight, scent, setting and knocks, there not always down to rabbits, I've seen stoats climb up fences and through snares, and other critters slipping through.. Tell you what its a nightmare getting a hedgehog out, same as in a longnet when they ball up tight, but there always released unharmed, they just sit there quietly....... Got some good sections to get at next week, I'll take some photos...

Have not posted for a long time now, but there is a probing interest within the animal bloody rights group to out right ban the snaring of animals and I state within Wales though not as yet in England, how do we as a collective argue against this?
I can understand the argument that traps are more use than snares, but we have to invoke the use of snares when dealing with foxes in certain predicaments, or am I mistaken, please somebody tell me whether I am right or wrong, I do not want to look as though I am misguided but the latest snares do not kill but restrain the animal which is a good thing and is being responsible towards the animals well being!
We as a responsible trapping society have to abide by the rules so why are we as a responsible trapping society always covering our backsides.
Is it getting more difficult to apply our trade?.
Personally I do not use poisons so the cost of job does increase, though I do see a better job satisfaction.
At the end of the day its not all about money.
We as a collective can not allow our sheer existence to be erased like a rubber. please fight for our rights as it will not stop at snaring it will escalate towards the usual trapping and eventually shooting so if you care about our rights think first.
