Shocked young in belly

Just bin out today for my first days ferreting of the season, had a good day killed 17 and let a couple of half grown ones go for another day.

 

Last season we stopped ferreting a month earlier then normal (end of jan)because we killed 2 rabbits with young inside which was early, but i was even more shocked today when one of the rabbits had 5 young inside her when we gutted it, now that is very late and not normall for september.

 

Has anyone else found that this season the breeding patterns have bin all over the place?

I've still got some very young kits at one burry on one of my permissions, all good sizes at the others, i'm pretty certain rabbits will breed all year round in the right circumstances

no matter how many times i come across that, young in their belly just dont sit comfortable with me.oh well that just goes part in parcel with ferreting i suppose.although i do try and start a bit late on in september so i dont have this.

It's not late in anyway what so ever, and completely normal, the rabbits dont all immediatly stop breeding as soon as September 1st comes around just to make life easier for ferretters. They will breed on until the weather becomes too harsh to raise a litter and then some will still have a go.

 

But yes they HAVE been all over the place - i.e finding kits late october / early feb due to climatic / weather change.

very true mate ,but i find i dont come across it as much nearer the end of september.not saying it couldnt happen though.

Its no late its only september rabbits are breeding all year round it used to be a good hard frost would stop them breeding now if you look in there pee in snow you will see blood in it a sure sign there still in season

Not very often by the sounds of it.

Over the years I've had pregnant rabbits in every month, in the middle of hard frosts and at times of heavy snow falls.

Its also going to be dependant on location - remember you are a lot further north than me, so the weather here will be milder later and hence young will be seen later. We notice a difference between our mountain top / hill top permissions and those in the low land.

From september to end of feb most weekends and sometimes twice a week, and never have i seen young in the belly in october november and december
