Maggies first daytime rabbits

Recommended Posts

Today was a bit special me and my son and maggie went back to the landed gentrys land, we were there two weeks ago and took 36 rabbits off then and had a good day.

Jet my lads saluki x is laid up after a session on the lamp on Friday the ground is very hard up here and rough going as the fields have just been harrowed but the big lad retrieved two shot foxes and picked up a couple of rabbits he is flying, at 3 years old he has just come into his own.Just a couple of scuffed paws he will be fine in a couple of days.

So we settled in going over the same warrens the first of which held 4 rabbits 3 of which maggie caught out of the same bolt hole, 1 after another. She coursed, caught and retrieved 1 after another which is her first ever daytime rabbits i was well chuffed and the thing is she made it look so easy!! :boogie:

every one wonders if their pup will be fast enough etc but she has matured at 17 months into a game intelligent hunter and has real focus around the warrens and follows the rabbits by sound around the sets. she just needs to keep a bit more distance from the hole entrys but it will come in time as she learns the game.

The best course of the day came out of a lovely clean field three holer, she didnt have it all her own way as this rabbit jinked and dived like f**k. she looked like losing it at a corner set but she turned it off and continued down the hill for 50 yards before leaping over a dry beck and catching it in a head over heels dive. she retrieved it part way up the hill and left it at a pile of dead rabbits we had left for collection later. Not ideal but she is an odd dog maybe she thought thats where i wanted it left?? she floored another bolter within 20 yards and retrieved it ok. so her total was 5 for the day we had 36 in total which was the same as last time.

She isnt perfect by any means she wandered off once and became deaf when i shouted at her and as i said earlier her retrieving isnt brilliant so she needs practice. She also gets a bit close to the hole entrances for my liking but all in all im very happy with my little dog :)

just a couple of photos that ive put on here before but im too tired to get the camera out. i really wish i could get images like magwitch and the other lad who has whippets, they must have reflexes like their dogs and somebody carrying their gear for them :D
