Clever old charlie

I was out giving the terrierman for the local hunt a hand on saturday, hounds cold marked at a big deep earth. The local farmer and gamekeeper wanted it delt with so we netted all the holes and entereed the dog, we was waiting back from all the holes when the fox backed out of a netted hole pushed the net back a bit then darted out of the side of it. I tried giving chase on fot and have gotscrathes from all the brambles now but the crafty bugger got away.

I told the terrierman what had happend and he said he had one the week before that had pulled the net back with his teeth before making his escape.

Any of you lads or lasses had anything like this happen to you?

i have seen this happens alot of times, very often when there is more than fox in a place or the dog isnt pushing it very hard the fox will naturally creep to the exit hole,(checking for danger i suppose) a net would only appear to them to be an easilly movable obstruction so just like a dog will nuzzle past it to freedom, they will often if sitting at the exit grab a net and pull it back in. just one of those things, they are artful creatures after all!!

there is nothing more satisfying than a fox hitting a net hard and being bagged right up though. even when they hit them hard backwards your unlucky if they get away, youd be suprised how fast a fox can go in reverse :D

i have also found that once hounds mark a place it is far harder to get a cleanly netted fox, for obvious reason.

cheers wink.

had a fox at weekend that dug out right under our feet while protecting gamebirds.had used all the nets and covered all holes,so we thought.gave dog run around for about an hour in a real big place.next thing you no charlie bolts right under our feet,he had dug his way out and gone.when bitch came out she had certainly got up close to her quarry but could not bottle him up.she will learn to grab hold next time.
