Alright, i'll be brief, and firstly state that this isnt an opinion, it's a question or series of questions . . . .

Since the hunting ban, a lot more people are killing foxes, especially with rifles at night. Although this is a very effective form of pest control, would members consider it sport also?

I have nothing against people who shoot foxes at night with a high powered rifle if it is carried out as PEST control, i.e. Game keepers, Shoots etc but I dont see it as sport. What I see as SPORT is going out at night with either a lurcher or shotgun where a bit of skill is required to call a fox into close range to have a chance of a shot or course. If you lamp 10 foxes with a high powered rifleman beside you and then lamp 10 foxes with a lurcher man or shotgun man beside you, I know which would get my adrenalin running quickest

any fool can shoot a fox

......only people who have a SGC or FAC

but anyone can buy a dog

Your rifle doesn't need months of training and a constant fitness regime. Anyone can pull a trigger but not everyone has the motivation and patience to train a dog. They are handing FAC's out like penny chews down here anyway.

this really does boil my piss !! :censored: , i like all fieldsports but what gives people with dogs the god given right to think they have a stake on foxes rabbits hares etc..

I agree dog men do act like they have the 1st priority over any animal, but whatever the method, dogs, guns, traps, snares etc, too much will eradicate the population of foxes.

Now if it is for genuine fox control then fair enough take what you need too, but if it is for sport then don't go overboard and take everything in the area.

Aaron what is with all this childish tittle tattle?

You assume that shooting rifles is easy......:wallbash: well that just goes to show that you know as little about rifles as I do about dogs. You say it takes months of training etc and patience, welll that may well be the case but people who get FACs dont't get issued them as penny chews at all.

People will have to have a good reason to get an FAC and will no doubt have done a fair bit of practice beforehand..... and before you start saying that is not the case then you should consider the fact that there are good and bad people in EVERY sport including dogmen & shooters, so don't pretend otherwise !:o

Shooters have regimes and practice. To be able to clean your rifle barrel , understand the internal/external ballistics and trajectory of your ammuntion all takes patience and practice. A great majority of people load their own ammo and this takes skill and practice also . Whether you hunt with dogs or rifles there is the same skill in using good fieldcraft. Most foxes run like feck when they see a lamp, so it ain't half as easy as you think ! The most I have ever shot in a night is 3 foxes !

I am not turning this into a p*ssing contest..... If you want to hunt with dogs great... and yes the law should be changed to allow hunting foxes with dogs, so I am on your side and peoples efforts would be better directed at the anti's not shooters ;)

I shoot rifles too, and Dave you are totally right in what you say.

I'd say I'm now 50/50 with using rifle and dogs. I enjoy both, be it plinking rabbits to trapping, lamping rabbits with dogs. I have friends who do not have dogs but shoot and vice versa, I also have friends who just fly hawks.

Like Dave has said, not everyone gets granted a FAC, there are important aspects to learn whilst owning a FAC and a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. I load my own too, and their is some skill required to use them.

Remember, Squeeze do not snatch boys! :tongue2:

Ive never read so much shite in all my life.

Some areas have more foxes than others, and always will have (be it less favourable areas or too much pressure from keepers etc).

There are enough areas that remain relatively untouched (arable/dairy/forestry/wetlands areas, nature reserves, towns and cities OR big pheasant shoots that see it more economically viable to release an extra couple of thousand birds etc etc).

Fox has been hunted from day dot and it aint gonna go away any time soon, so all the Attenboroughs can put away their hankies (joke btw)
