OldTrapCollector 377
Mike A few tips that might help you - Bait seems to make little difference - rabbits or chicken/game seem popular, but soon get flyblown and maggoty. Some trappers claim that this doesn't make much difference to the fox attraction issue but who knows? I use kippers as bait throughout thesummer months in all my baited traps and they seem to resist going maggoty more, and are irresistable to foxes and mink etc Site - this is important. I found that alongside tracks or headlands works best, and even better if you can get the trap alongside a wire fence or similar - they cannot walk round the trap then and this helps. Make sure the cage is pegged down to stop it tipping over and releasing the fox too. I also find that a few shovelfuls of earth or shavings etc helps to improve catch rates - foxes don't like stepping on wire mesh floors if they can help it. Non target species - sounds like you might have caught a non-target species first time round. Make sure you move the trap from this site to a more foxy looking area, and away from badger setts, public footpaths etc Check the trap daily, in the morning if possible, this can be done with a pair of binoculars from 50 yards away to make sure all is in order to save scenting the trap location Good luck!
