Cutting alloy beer barrells in half?

Recommended Posts

Have seen these 9 gallon beer barrells in use on a couple of lads yards in the past as water bowls, they are cut around the middle and the 2 halves used.

I've got the beer barrell, now I just need to find how to cut the bloody thing! I haven't tried anything yet, the only tools I have suitable would be either a 4 inch grinder or a hacksaw

Has anyone done any of these?

Reason for use is as a water bowl in my yard, my dog flips the stainless pet ones over, I can't be arsed making the concrete ones and I doubt he'll lift one of these!!!

I've started leaving him out on a chain during the day, something I can only do if I am 100% certain he has plenty of water for the day.

Anyone?

Thanks.

use the grinder with a metal cutting disc on it , be sure to smooth the edges off with a file after you have cut the barrel  and don't forget the saftey goggles

i use those half barrels too, except i cut them at 1/3rd depth, more handy that way, then cut the pole out of the middle.

to save all that trouble buy a big black bucket (10L) and just throw a brick or 2 in the bottom of it before you fill it up.... job done lol i bought a bucket from asda for £1

grinder will do, but make sure it's all the gas is out of it if you get a stick and stick it into the top you push down the valve that will let the gas out ,

Top advice mate..........knew someone who tried to make a bbq out of a 45 gallon drum. He was cutting it with a grinder in a garage and the fumes built up, it blew up, killed him and the grinder was stuck in the roof.

use a special alluminium blade in the grinder , or one for stone as they contain a lubricant.

a metal disc will cut it but may overheat and shatter

how you getting on in new house mate ????

The barrells aren't pressurised ones, they had real ale in, which in the pub I got them from is hand drawn so no gas.

Getting on really well Sean thanks, done loads already, got plenty to keep me busy though lol.

Trying to get as much as possible done before the dark nights ...........

Have learned loads already, I fitted a new bathroom suite and tiled it all with limestone tiles last week ............ I'd never done that before!

Just needs grouting and painting now :icon_eek:
