BenBhoy 4,706
now then lads. right, call me a softy or whatever but i've agreed to take in a staffy from a rescue centre, my missus loves them. i know chances are it wont have done feck all and it wont really matter if it dont ever do feck all as it just coming here, first and foremost, as a pet. but.... i just wanna know if anyone here has worked a pure (not x) staff on anything before? i know it aint gonna catch long ears, but if working alongside (or a few metres behind!!) it could be a useful partner to a lurcher running charlie?? or perhaps just a bushing dog to flush to lurcher? like i said, dont matter if it dont do nothing. cheers. hogdog 61
An uncle of mine used to use his as a flushing Dog and he was quite good at it apparently. For the moment just get to know the Dog and see what comes naturally, there's alot of variety of character and body type in them. Quote Link to post
martinabley 4
i work a staffy bitch, with my lurcher and ferrets. i would advice you to try to get a young bitch [bitches being smaller and faster] and get her broken to ferrets first then you will be sorted. i dont usually bother using nets just bolt for dogs. the staffy will squeeze right in big thick hedges and waite for a bolt, then grab the rabbits as soon as they leave the holes, she can usually predict wich hole the rabbit will bolt from. staffys love to work, but get em used to ferrets first. black recking it 730
got a 15year old staffy here that use to do ok at the bushing and my brother has his aunt and she was the same go through anything to get the bunnies he has a young bitch aswell doing well Quote Link to post
black-spring 18
i used to take my little black stafford lamping, never caught feck all, but loved trying the best shape i ever got him in. had to be very careful when out with my mates dogs as when ever they caught a "rabbit" he was ok still it stopped moving then would try to nail the lurchers! never a good thing when you want more then one invite out! he used to rush through the cover more for fun than any thing else, but had feck all nose, at 11 years old he still comes out and about but is more intrested pleaseing him self than anything else! but i have know a fair few staffords that would take to bushing, just be sure they are not about to scrap with the other dogs when the catch anything. not sure where you are but i got him into lure running, helped his prey dirve. regards rob, Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
They ain't the best or most appropriate dog but they'll give you some fun in the field. One I kept had a great nose, another didn't. Plenty of drive though and whatever they catch tends to stay caught. Quote Link to post
