Good night out foxing.

Recommended Posts

On the permission nearest my house I saw the farmer had been combining a couple of his fields:D so we headed out last night with high hopes of seeing a few foxes mooching about. When we arrived at the farm we headed over to the first field behind the farm buildings. We were slightly disappointed  when we ralised the field hadn't been baled and the lines of straw were knee height and large enough for a fox to duck and dive behind and make shots from ground level more difficult:angry:

Luckily we there were some bales for us to climb on to get a better view of the field and once we were in position didn't have to wait too long ....probablly due to the smell of the liver I put out as bait.:)

Along came our first victim too interested in the smell of the liver to be paying any attention to us 110 yards away. Just as I took my shot it moved and it ended up with a belly shot :realmad: and ran 20 yards before it dropped dead. It was a vixen possibly this years.

After waiting another 30 mins another fox appeared and I don't know what happened but suffice to say I missed, so I was not best pleased . After that pathetic effort by me it was time for my mate to have his shot. I am not sure whether or not it was the same fox or not but after a further 20 minutes another fox appeared out of the treeline and was following th scent of the liver and my mate nailed it perfectly through the chest. It was an old dog fox, quite aheavy bugger too !

After that we headed off to the other field and we did a few calls to see what was about and sure enough a set of eyes appeared the only problem was where we had parked up we hadn't realised that the there was a strip that hadn't been combined and as the fox started coming towards us it sudddenly disappeared and we couldn't tell whether it went left/right or straight into it the uncut strip so we decided to just head off elsewhere and come back later on for another look.

We headed on down to the chicken from but the mist had came in across most of the fields and it was pointless being there and the only set of eyes we saw bolted when they saw the lamp.:icon_eek:

So we headed back up to the other field and got into a better position this time. Whilst scanning the field with the NV we saw presumably the same fox mooching about. I was struggling to get a decent shot at it as it looked to be a small vixen and it kept weaving in and out of the lines of straw. Finally after a few minutes I took my shot and it hit it but I knew something wasn't right as it definitely didn't drop and it wasn't limping either but it was moving about in a dazed kind of fashion moving away but slowly and kept circling at the same time. My mate got his .243 out and I put the lamp onto it for hime to finish it off and that he certainly did !

When we went to retrieve it , it became apparent that what had happened was my first shot had had taken off the bottom of its jaw !:censored: No photo of that, I didn't think it right to take a photo of it after it had suffered from a bad shot like that.:nono:

Anyway..... back out tonight to see what other fields he has cut tonight ! :gunsmilie:

nice big old fox that top one, see after they get a bit lampshy do you use a filter? and if so which colour produces best results?

Both of those were shot using night vision. I tend to only use the lamp when driving about trying to spot them, then off with the lamp straight away and use the NV. So I don't need to worry as much about them being lamp shy and don't worry about using filters.
