bushing dog

Recommended Posts

Right lads, Im thinking about getting a little bushing bitch to work along side my lurcher bitch.

Iv been thinking about allsorts of different breeds.

Basically i want a dog that will hunt through any cover moving rabbits (and anything else) for the lurcher.

I was thinking about a larger type terrier such as a Bedlington.

Iv been thinking about Spaniels too!!!

Cocker, springer or sprocker? (stupid name that) and even a Tekel!

What i dont want is a dog that will go nose down and set off on a line not to be seen for hours, like wise i dont want a earth dog type because i dont want to have to dig to it....

Also i dont have millions to spend so it probably rules out the pedgrees (to be fair they are wasted on me anyway)

Can any one make a suggestion?

Id like to hear from people who work dogs in a similar fashion please.

Or if anyone knows of any likely litters, Cheers Dave,

i use a little 3/4cocker 1/4 russel, and it works very well, thought it would be a popular cross but seems this is not the case for some reason

Plenty of choices out their most will do the job, but i work 2 small jacks, i need them to get into really tight bramble therefore i like them small, able to work the thick stuff like silk, not having to crash through it like some bigger dogs do. Likes been said if you have plenty of earths might be worth you working something less prone to going to ground. Both my jacks are not from hardcore stuff, but saying that the little one has gone to ground 3 times.....only for a short while but it seemed like forever. I would def not get something too leggy though, would have to be a cocker or very short springer. Would also add i like mine to give tongue lets the lurchers know whats coming. Going back to size......the best bushing dog i had was a little border collie bitch.

i would of said get a terrier , but after seeing my father in laws springer going through heavy cover id say a springer or cocker x terrier only saying a cross because if your bushing for the lurchers ideally something that will give tongue is an advantage , (spaniels aint meant to make any noise when working)..

watchman theres a few people on here using cocker x patterdales , they are meant to be good to

I'd go for a terrier anyday of the week, they dare go places other dogs would refuse

I had working collies for years and they would jam themselves in places that my terriers wouldnt look at.

Having said that, I now have 4 jrts. Smallest is 10" largest 12 1/2" and they dont leave much behind. All 4 will go to ground, but I can call them out without to much trouble. 2 will retrieve to hand, all 4 will work in a beating line (without collars and leads) and yes,I do get asked back to both shoots that they work on!

Just depends on how you train them.

Have you had one?

Im worried about it going nose down arse up and dissapearing off on a scent, Im thinking more spaniel cross as I believe they work closer in.
