Hi all. over the years i have noticed a huge increse of people taking up hunting. I am also finding it hard to find land that hasnt been hunted eg lamp shy rabbits wizend foxes ect. So do you think this small island of ours is over hunted?

is that a trick question ? i know how it feals when you go and ask a land owner if you can hunt ther land and he or she turns round and says sorry i have already got a lad that hunts here ! or if your lucky they turn round to you and say yes go ahead but then they go on to tell you that there was someone that used to go on the ground and shoot but they havent been on for ages , so you goto the ground with the lamp and dog and relise theres f**k all on the ground cos the prick that was there before you with the high power rifle has wiped the place and moved on to another peace of ground ! years back when i used to share ground with a few dog boys the saying was between us that (theres plenty for everybody) yes that was until the lads gave up the dog and replaced them with high power rifles now the saying is ( theres f**k all on here cos them pricks wiped it ) so my awnser to your question is that theres to meny owners of high power rifles in this small island and not enough real hunters :thumbs-up:

theres still loads and loads of game on our smal island... if you have the intelligence to hop in your car and have a little drive. theres not much around me, so when i have a lurcher that is running i do a little travelling to places that are hanging out with game. (permission of course!) :rocker:

I was wondering the same thing yesterday as we drove out to the fens on yet another game bird preservation mission: just how many foxes are going to die in one day, from various means. Yet their numbers never decrease: they are shot, dug, run over, and caught by other means. Same goes for the rabbits. It would be interesting to get an ACCURATE figure just for the foxes on any one day: though I know that would be impossible.

High powered rifles ruined the land :11: The truth here is that a centre fire is THE most effective method of control for foxes ,deer ,etc. Some lads promise the earth to farmers about being able to control numbers of these animals with lurchers but fall short ,well short of any sort of control or maintanence of numbers. The rifle boys move in and start CONTROLLING NUMBERS.That is the way it is around us anyway .There is always a surplus of any game to move into a void left by control as I know to my cost ,having lost land to people prepared to break the law .Going out at different times may reveal more game than you thought was there .Most lads go out with the lurchers on dark and do the same route every time on a farm but the thinking lad varies the times and routes to stop quarry becoming accoustomed to routine, and believe me they do .

High powered rifles may have done away with a lot of foxes, but on one of the shoots I do the terrier work on they can only get so many at night: miss one and it'll not come in again to call. They have shot I don't know how many already this season, and we've already had 10 with the terriers in an area no more than a mile square since the end of October. Yes, in some places the riflers have made a huge dent in the population, but we're lucky: either they're not very good shots, or there's a lorra lorra foxes in this area. :D

your from here smoothdog arent you??? personally i think its summertime hunters that leaves the ground bare... my wee patch is startin to pick up again but at the end of summer all was slaughtered... wee leverets and everything were threw over the road to make it look like road kill :censored:

to gamedogs>> are you the same 'game dogs' that put up the video clip with the dogs baiting a live defensless bear to death and then didnt know the difference between that and giving a fox a chase with the hounds??? if it is you then i would doubt very much if you would know what a real hunter is!!!!

Foxes dont belong to anyone, whoever has the permission, can kill them any bloody way they like.I cannot stand folk who denigrate another mans sport, because its not their way of doing things. I,ve killed foxes every way going, and the rifle is best from a vermin conntrol viewpoint. Dont make the mistake of saying its the riflemen that educate foxes, because its just as much the fault of others, doing , or attempting to do the job, with a dog that isnt up to it, this rifleman doesnt educate foxes. I completely agree, regarding dogs, there is nothing i love more, than watching a pack of hounds, or a good lurcher on the lamp, there is absolutely nothing finer, but that doesnt make the handler, any more of a sportsman than the rifleman.

i have'nt noticed any decline in population with any of the game or vermin here, but i have noticed that since this ban was enforced the foxes have become a lot more nervous, now i put this down to a couple of things, firstly theres a massive increases in the amount of shotgun certificate holders since the ban was brought in, and secondly theres a lot more people driving fields in subarus etc simply because it's a very effective way of catching plenty of game or vermin and it's very hard to get caught.

i dont have any problems with any methods people have for providing there self/others with a bit of pest control or even sport, but one thing that pisses me off is people that see a fox, then decide to squeek it in without any means of killing it, you know the sort people, they call the fox right up to them then the next day go round telling everyone how they could of killed a good fox last night if there dog would tackle one, some of the idiots even slip there dogs on them knowing full well that they wont take it, whats the f*****g point ???

these are the sort of people that are educating everything imo ;)

no ime not the same person ! i wonder how much of yous that disagree with what i said ,DONT OWN FIREARMS ? :signthankspin: all the folk i know with high power rifles only waist bullets on fox just so they can hang the fox up on the land owners fence and make it look like there just out shooting vermin and doing it for the sport but when infact they are out shooting enything they can take to the game dealer and make cash , thats all ime going to say on this .

I think you will find, anyone thats gone to the trouble of aquiring an fac, and the land to go with it, doesnt need to poach game, i certainly dont.As for shooting game at night  I,m out to shoot fox only, and since when has shooting a fox, been a waste of a bullet? You show me a game dealer who will take hares pheasant , partridge etc, when they have been shot with a centrefire. :11:
