Larsen trap!

Recommended Posts

hi all

i have a very large number of magpies in my area! i cant shoot all of them with my AAS410K.177 although i have had about 20 so far this year!

QUESTIONS!

1 where can i buy a Larsen trap,at a reasonable price?

2 would i be breaking the law if i set it up in my garden? to protect local song birds!

3 do i need permission from local authority's,to set up in my garden? & put it out on common land?

4 and do i need a license to do so?

i just feel i need to give the birds in my area a chance!

regards

Have a look at this topic which covers similar ground.

The general position is that it is legal to use a Larsen Trap in the UK provided that you comply with the general licenses.

These state a number of things: the reason that you are trapping, your responsibilities to the call bird and the caught birds and that you have the land owners permission. I think this last point would rule out Common land.

In your case the license would be GL08 'To kill or take certain birds to conserve flora and fauna (including wild birds)'

http://www.naturalen...8_tcm6-7672.pdf

It would be in your interest to print, read and have to hand a copy of that licence is case you were challenged. Licences vary between England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland to make sure you're using the right one. Species allowed can vary as can the conditions (e.g. in Scotland all Larsen traps must be registered)

BASC have a useful page on this too: http://www.basc.org....-pest-birds.cfm

Oh and making them is quite easy if you have a plan to follow. There is a 'how to' topic HERE and there's a book I can recommend ....whistling.gif

as said above best thing to do would be to make your own, cheaper, and a bit more satisfying when u catch, however the Larsen mate things available from game and country are really effective, i use stoats as bait in mine for hoodys and magpies,

as for the law breaking, read the open general license, and related laws regarding larsen traps in your part of the country, just so iv anyone asks questions you can proove your not some numpty but know what your doing.

depending on the laws in your area you may have to register your cage witht he local WCO, and display the number and telephone number of the local police station on a tag (we have to do this in scotland)

stick to the laws - checked regularly, with magpies twice a day because theyre usually pretty keen, and have a perch shelter clean water and food

placing the trap in your garden isnt illegal however you might get a bit of stick from neghbours, as for common ground, i dont know however i wouldnt bother as it will end up nicked or vandalised, unless you live in a small community and they are all for what you are doing

best of luck though
