advise please

hi all iv just got my self 2 3 month old ferrets, they are a bit wild as they didnt get handled much.

was just wundering were i would start breaking a 6 month old beddy whippet to them?

Get your ferrets hand tame first mate, handle them every day after they have been fed, Talk to them so they learn your voice because their eyesight is not so good they dont know whats trying to pick them up.

I have my ferret hutch near my kennel so the dogs see the ferrets daily and eventually pretty much ignore them, gently introduce them to your dog, don't just let them all out together....

Hold the ferret and let the dog sniff it, if the dogs the timid type and sharp "no" should give him the idea, if not a water pistol works well.

Then let the ferret run loose but hold the dog (waterpistol again)

It might take a week or two.

I don't allow my ferrets to jump up and grab meat or rabbits from me when i feed them, i place it far away from their bed so they don't lunge at my hands thinking its food when i try to pic them up.

Remember some are wilder than others but they can all be tamed with time.

thanks for that, one of them is coming along grate but the other is a little , he is starting to ignore them already witch is good, im handling them every hour or so for about half an hour. is this to much or carnt they be to much?

Well from a ferrets point of view its not too much but from a social aspect spending half an hour per hour all day is a little bonkers and i bet your hands stink...

Beddylurcher, you play with your ferrets as often as you like! They will love the attention and you will enjoy handling them as well.

 

When I introduce a new dog to ferrets I always get them eating and drinking together. Always put the bowl down for the ferrets and let the dog join in, not the other way for obvious reasons!
