mark81 0
Hi Guys This is only my second post on here, but hopefully you will be kind enough to answer my question(s). In 3 weeks we pick up a springer pup (dog) What is the best way to go about training him as a gundog? and what age do we start? We are getting alot of mixed responses at the moment, so we are getting a little confused. Any help would be grand. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to post
rickyspringer 15
my advice would be to let the pup be a pup, socialise is the key, aswell as lots of fun and no training which is regimented at all, the key is to be building a great relationship with the pup, and then slowly start to build training up as the pup gets a little mature maybe 8 to 9months, expect training to go backwards at times and the pup to go deaf. There are some good books on the market, aswell as dvd's RS Quote Link to post

The subject of Springers is a strange, as people who I talk to that use them as gundogs say they don't come better than that, then you speak to a Lab owner and they say Springers are a no no, christ what did you get one of them for!!! They are mad. But I am guessing its each to their own. Thank you for your reply, what books would you recommend? Or even better what DVD's? Thanks in advance. Mark Quote Link to post

Tell us more about the pup on the way anyways here is a pic of Quinn at 5 weeks old. His grandparents are working gundogs from devon, I will get a copy of the certificate to find out exactly where from, but his parents are pets, I hope this won't be too much of a problem as I am sure he has the right genetic code to be trained well. what about yours Rick? Thank you for your info I have just looked the DVD's up, will be the most expensive dvd's I have bought to date, but very worth it I am sure. Quote Link to post
rickyspringer 15
Yeh the dog sould be fine don't worry about that, aslong as the dog is from a strong working line it should be fine, my two are, the youngster with the most potential is from a pedigree which doesn't have many ftch's in it but he's a dream - full of natural ability.. regarding them dvd's they are really expensive but definitely worth it mate, look on ebay at joe irving, that may be the best port of call Quote Link to post

What kind of shooting do you do? Quote Link to post
