vizsla's vs weimaraners

gary your dogs are crackers mate ,and look like they do a job too ,

shame vizlas are such good lookers in a way,

 

as they are getting more and more common as pets round here ,

still not 10 a penny ,but still getting more popular ,but you can understand why.

real shame if they go the wrong way.

I know theres a few on here who are very clued up on both these breeds so i thought id post my question to you guys. ive had experience with both breeds (training not working) and like most have always found vizsla's much softer, not necessarily easier to train but a stern word has always been adequate reprimand.

I was wondering if this has ever reflected in other ways on the shooting field? i know many weimaraners will tackle game that bits back, and seem to have a deep hatred of foxes, how does this compare to the vizsla? are they any softer in the field?

It's hard to generalise but the (real working) Weimeraner is the more likely to tackle foxes etc. My latest vizsla bitch is gentle and softly retrieves dead game but if anything has a go at her then it's look out; the last Saturday of the season last year a fox was shot on a pheasant drive and she was sent to retrieve it but unbeknown to me it hadn't been shot cleanly and it went to bite her - next thing one snapped fox where she'd shaken it so hard it's spine had broken - brought it back looking like a bag of rags.

Talking to the Danes recently and they're reporting more and more weimeraners having to be shot whilst out hunting for attacking their owners and fellow hunters as the breed is being bred 'harder' over there - the guts has been bred out of most Weims over here now. as Gary says the GWP is a better bet for biting game but also have a look at the Pudelpointer if foxes are your quarry - how can I put this, they're not fond of them shall we say, and will go out of their way to get to one.

im not thinking specifically just fox but really anything that could give them trouble.

both my retrievers (well, one died but i still count her) are mad for fox, nothing to do with me training them, just on seperate occasions when the oportunity arose they clocked on and did well and have done since.

Hi all, does anyone know if Gary is still breeding? I’m desperately trying to track down a Gary from wales that I brought my vizsla from in 2010 and sadly lost this year! I found the email address, vent196@aol but no reply as yet…. So just been googling and found this forum and one of Gary’s pics looks like oh could be the place
