PINNACLE 2,297
It's easy to say wait but where we are the bushes are getting raided already so picked a kilo and stuck them in the freezer will get another if I can find them in after a frost or two and them will be able to compare next year. savaloy 1
Going out later to get this years batch of sloe berries, every year I make the mixture slightly different & I've never been dissapointed. What are your favourite recipies, methods? Do you find freezing the sloes first gives you a better end product? Cheers ive been making sloe gin for years & i always leave my sloes til october before i pick them, they will ripen a bit more yet. you can freeze them or not before they go in the liquid doesnt seem to matter. i do (roughly) 12 oz sloes, 8oz sugar per bottle of gin. Damson gin is also good & at the minute i have got three bottles of plum brandy on the go, done in roughly the same way . . . AWESOME !
"Earth!" 503
another tip you must try!! when the sloe/damson gin/vodca is ready, strain the drink but dont throw the berrys and all the bits left.put it back into the container and top up with a dry cider for a week or so.. really is worth trying peoples
markha 99
Agree its too early to pick the sloes, they will be a bit sharp tasting, hence the old recipe of adding almonds to take the edge off. October, freeze for a couple of days, tesco's own gin (tried with gordans-far to dry) 1lt bottle, half fill with sloes, add 500g sugar then fill the bottle to the top. Do this all the time, left for xmas day, nice red, sweet alcoholic sloe gin, same with vodka too. Will be trying with 'Tofoc' vodka, which is a Welsh toffy vodka, lovely and may be great with some berry fruit flavours in it
Polkey 70
a mate and me picked about 7 kilos yesterday and plenty left to pick. Big fat and juicy, its like october up where i live but will put them in the freezer for a week first then rather than use a pin i grab a handful at a time and shove a fork in em to save time. I make gin and vodka but prefer the vodka as it smoother but to much sugar makes it like syrup. I guess its trial and error but thats the fun. The best advise i had was to buy good gin and cheap vodka, last year used bombay saphire gin and imperial vodka an was well happy with both.

Helen 2
I use a clean dog slicker brush to puncture the berries you can do loads at once. I'm sure this is not why my Sloe Gin is awful lol. It always goes a horrible brown colour, why is this?
