Had a look.

Recommended Posts

Yo you airgunners, another four fields of cereal have been cut on one of my permissions, so you know what its like, had to go and have a look this evening to see if there was owt about as they say. The first field did not look very promising, but out is out eh! It was just starting to get dark when I entered the first field, the lads in their tractors were doing a bit of overtime removing the straw bails, there's something about this time of the year when the slow long days, turn into hurried short days, the culmination of a years whacking anything on the general list to protect the crops is now paying dividends. The new cereal crops will be planted as soon as the straw is in, and the land is machined, to me this is the end of my season, and now its September the first, its now the start of my new season :clapper: So tonights session is as much about looking for hotspots to ferret, as it is for bagging with the HW100. Once away from the noise of the tractors and trailers, it became obvious that the rabbits were also taking an interest in the comings and goings of the machines, so while they were distracted I drove past and whacked a couple, so a good start. This did'nt follow form, because I only whacked one more in this field. So on to field number two. This looked more like it, the odd buck chasing doe's round the hedges, a chance for me to whack a couple more, which I did, five more. So with 8 in the bag it was looking like a good night. Field three is a little harder, its gated, and the gates whine like your Mrs with PMT, very loud, and the bunnies know your coming, which makes it a challenge I suppose. I did this bit of ground with a bit of speed, the rabbits here are either out, or not, and only three did'nt know the sound of the gate, so they got whacked for their deafness. Eleven in the boot, and one field to go. This is one of those fields that is bordered by two other landowners, one I get on with, and the other is an arogant old git, so I dont shoot the rabbits on his land, the rabbits can eat his profits as far as I'm conserned, he once had moan about shooting some pheasants of his, I told him that the pheasants were not on his land, and that I had permission to take pheasants on the surounding land, so now I leave his rabbits, and just whack his pheasants :D This fiels always produces a few bunnies, and tonight was no different, after a drive round this field it had produced five, this brought my total to sixteen, not bad for a drive around four feilds just using the headlights on my landy, and if I had gone round again, I would probably had more, but I was happy with my haul, so set off home, here's the end of day pic.

It may be a while yet before I move over to ferreting due to the cover, but after the first frosts and I can see what I'm doing, then the ferret take up most of my time. I'll still do a bit of airgunning, but it does become less productive on the bunny front than the ferrets, and with me its all about feeding my animals, and I'm a rabbiter at heart, you'll see when you put yours to work :D

Avoid the cheap nylon nets, they tangle at the sign of a twig or leaf, and its no joke when rabbits are bolting while your untangling your nets every time one of your fezzers walk through one, if I were you I would save up, or put out two mince pies and a pack of Stella out for Santa :D
